Quiet campground on the backside of the base. Not well known.

Stayed along what used to be their golf course. Pretty sparse camp site. The facilities seemed to be nice, we would likely have enjoyed it a bit more if we'd been in the main area. All told we'll stay again if in the area.

Sewage dump at back-in sites, although recently constructed and very nice, lacks the ability for a pickup truck to adequately pull straight in and exit without the front wheels becoming hopelessly placed in a mud bank. My motorhome I could place by judiciously backing & filling (tugboat term) and hoping my sewage hose was long enuff. I would hope the maintenance group would think of placing rock fill & pouring a concrete extension to the site allowing an easy approach and exit.

The location and overall facility were ok. The BX, commissary and Class Six were pretty close. We had to stay in the overflow area; a pretty small and unattractive area. The main area looked pretty good. They have an amazing walking trail. The laundry is clean and free. We would stay again.

The daily rate is $18. FamCamp is set near a pond surrounded by picnic areas. Catch and release fishing allowed in the pond. There are two 34-person tornado shelters, one at each end of the campground. There are two each washers and dryers in the laundry room. Free! The bathhouse is small, with no dressing room privacy whatsoever, and very dirty. It was not cleaned at all in the week we were there and seemingly had not been cleaned for some time before. We were told by Outdoor Rec that, because of funding shortfalls, the cleaning contract called for cleaning once a month! Directions from the south: Take Exit 42 off the I-35 toll road; after passing through the toll booth, continue straight on to 47th street; turn right (east) on 47th street for about 3.5 miles; left (north) on Rock Road for approximately 2.5 miles to the main gate on left. From the north on I-35 toll road take the Kellogg Avenue exit (Exit 50) and go west to Rock Road, south to the main gate; from the north on I-135 get off at Exit 6A onto Kellog Avenue and go east to Rock Road, south to the main gate. The Air Capital Inn is the first building on the left after passing through the gate. There is enough room (barely) to park a big rig up against the curb in the Inn's parking lot while you go inside to check in.

We recommend that you make a reservation. They want you to enter the main gate then proceed to the Air Capital Inn (N 37.63587,W 97.24873) to check in. They will assign a site and give you directions (map) to the campground. Verbal directions are hard to follow because the roads are not straight and make several twists and turns. There have been many nice improvements since we last visited the park. We live in the area and have been waiting and hoping for the promised improvements for several years. The park used to be ignored and unorganized but now the Air Capital Inn desk seem to have an efficient process to manage the facilities.

New pads are great...Need to revise directions because once the road turns south, you actually will go to the right to get to the new pads. They are located next to a well stocked catch-and-release pond. My young daughters had a blast cathing fish. There is also a playground at the site as well as being walking distance from tennis courts and the Dole Center which houses the gym, indoor pool, bowling alley, library, dining & club. There is also a 2-mile rubber paved walking/jogging path that meanders throughout the old golf course right next to the FAMCAMP!

A really nice, new campground. For 18 bucks you couldn't ask for more. No homesteaders yet. Well kept and I'm told more new sites are coming. New showers and laundry. Easy check in. This is one we'll use again when we travel this way. Even has catch and release fishing lake. Only thing missing is cable and wifi.

Check in is at Air Capitol Inn, where the folks are very nice and helpful. If you have pets take their shot record(s) with you to check-in! The new FamCamp is open ($18 per night). Large, level concrete sites with 20/30/50 amp water and sewer. The current watering system for the newly sodded grass leaves a lot to be desired. I had to put on my rubber boots to hook-up the utilities.

Great place for $14 a night. Yes, it is small. Yes, sites are close together. Big deal. Unless you're going to live there, the FamCamp is fine. Quiet place in private area. Big field behind the sites. The 50 amp power at my site's pedestal didn't work. Out comes the extension cord to the pedestal. Fixt. Yes, I reported the outage to Outdoor Rec. CE will fix it. Good water pressure at the sites. No cable or wi-fi. The antenna pulled in enough channels for me. Maybe when McConnell finishes the Krueger Rec Area (KRA) they'll have those additional amenities. If you fish, lakes at the KRA are within walking distance. Same with the base running trail, paintball field, frisbee golf and RC car course, though paintball, frisbee golf and the RC course get very little use.
June 20 - 21, 2010
I just spent two nights here at McConnell. The airman at the gate gave me directions to the famcamp which was easy to find. Its small, old, sites right next to each other, and there are absolutely no signs at the famcamp on how or where to register. I chose an empty site and set up, got my instructions on how to register from this website! The lady at the front desk was pleasant and helpful. She did say that at times the famcamp is full and calling ahead for a reservation is a good idea. She offered the hotel laundromat at no charge to do laundry. She also mentioned that if you have pets you must present their shot records in order to register. And the planned expansion is not ever happening as far as she knew, still in the rumor/talking stage. The camp itself is not really suitable for a big rig, and there are no sewer hookups. The cable tv outlet on the electric box is not hooked to anything hence is not functional, but the electric worked. The camp is located in a very pleasant and out of the way part of the base. Lots of grass, a couple of small lakes nearby. Base amenities are fine but be aware that the class VI store is overcharging outrageously. I was shocked at the prices and mentioned it to someone standing next to me with a clipboard. He turned out to be the beer distributor and said the manager was using an 80% markup vs. the 20% that was normal off base. Otherwise it was a quiet pleasant place to stop for a couple of nights, I'd stay there again.
Other posts here adequately describe the actual Fam Camp. The satisfaction this Fam Camp can provide depends entirely on what you want. There are "NO GUNS" signs at the main gate. It is quiet...we were the only ones there. There have been no updates as of April 2010. If you intend to boondock, this is great. If you want a dump site, BRING AN 18 INCH CROW BAR, A 15 INCH FLAT-BLADE SCREWDRIVER, and a good pair of heavy gloves, so you can get the man-hole cover (VERY HEAVY) off of the dump site at spot #1. WARNING---IT STINKS and you will need about 12 feet of discharge hose to reach. It is isolated from most noises. Staff at Air Capital Inn were courteous but some were not very knowledgeable about the RV Camp. I will not take a trailer there again. If I stay on base, it will be without the trailer. If I take the trailer, I will stay off base.

This is second time we have stayed here. No changes since last year. Small, but rural, quiet setting on base. There are a total of 10 sites, only 8 have water. Sites 9&10 share water with Sites 7&8, so have a long water hose in case you get 9 or 10. Site 1, 9 & 10 are grass, others are paved. No tall trees so satellite should work for TV. No individual sewer hookup, but dump site is adjacent to Site #1 and easy to get to. No WiFi, but Verizon data card works fine. Must go to Air Capital Inn, on your left in 2nd block when you enter Main Gate off of Rock Road. Pay up front, and check if you need to stop by when you leave - they told me no need to so long as I left by checkout time - 11AM. Nice people at the VQ (Air Cap Inn) where you check in. If not full, ask not to be next to someone as sites are fairly close. No nearby bathhouse, so be prepared to use your own or walk/drive to Shoppette or VQ if necessary. Decent value @ $14, year round, and in-town Wichita, KS. Lots of shopping - everything - nearby. Golf course and fitness trail adjacent, good outdoor location.

We just used this as an overnight stop, returning to Texas from leave. Not much to say other than clean and better armed security than other near by campgrounds. Was quiet overnight, but construction crews were working by 0700 across the field. We were the only ones there. Don't think it'd be to enjoyable if all the spaces were occupied as they are close together. Had to go to billeting to check in/out. Billeting is located at the 2nd left after you go through the main gate. Rock Road is still under construction, and is still a pain.

It has already been said about this campground. Word is they are going to improve the campground, but don't count on it. The gym is just as bad as the campground. I don't think the base is on the closure list, but it has the feel of a base that is. Just getting past all the road construction is bad enough. They are still working on Rock Road. You have to go pass it, and do a U turn to get back to it. Stay here if your passing through.

WalMart with hookups. I don't mind that there were no amenities, but I would like full hookups. Nothing more than a great level concrete pad with water, electricity, and rudimentary cable TV. The dump station is nearby. A little too expensive ($14.00) for what was offered. But better than nothing.

Agree with the other posts. This is not up to fam camp standards. The sites are pretty close together. We have double slides on one side and if there was a rig next to us with a slide on both sides you wouldn't be able to walk between them. 8 sites have water and electricity and two sites have only electricity and share water with sites one to two spots away and have to use a "T" fitting. Cable TV for local channels only and they come in as digital. Verizon air card works real good for internet. We could not find any recycling at the BX as previously mentioned. Good place for a short term stop, real quiet and peaceful. We were surprised to find only one empty site upon arriving this time of the year (Thanksgiving eve). However, the place never filled up.
