A website member has suggested a sponsorship program to provide free copies of the U.S. Military Campgrounds Directory to personnel returning from Active Duty at "Operation Iraqi Freedom" and "Operation Enduring Freedom" who is a camper or RV'er.

The idea has any website user purchasing 10 copies of the Directory software at a discounted rate of $7.95 each that would be given free to a qualifying Active Duty member in the name of the sponsor.

Of course, no other details have been decided. Tell us what you think about this possible program?

I'd consider it.

But why 10, why not 5 or 2. Eighty bucks a shot is some good change for use retired enlisted folks.

I love the idea, but like MazdaMiatasBreakDownLess Said $80 is a bit steep, is there a way you could work it out that we can just buy how ever many we are comfortable with and you just send them out when you have 10 orders? Also I don't really know too many active duty personnel any more. How do you plan to find a list of people to give the software to?

Good ideas and concerns - there's really no reason to have any minimum.

If implemented, there's many details that would need to be decided. Getting the word out to find qualified recipients is also one of my main concerns. It's been suggested to inform military campground managers, solicit help from website users (who might have contacts), use the eNewlsetter, and other ideas you may have.

This is just an idea that's being explored. While for a worthy cause, it might be more than an unorganized group could handle. Perhaps this is a project the S.M.A.R.T. organization could manage, or a website user volunteer to become project manager. ???

Larry,

As an active duty member I will say I would love a free copy, but since I am already here and have not been overseas yet, I won't ask for that. What I would like to suggest for the site is to make contact with Military One Source. This is a website ( www.militaryonesource.com ) that we are constantly being referred to for all types of information about everything military. When I typed the word "campground" into the search engine it gave me the usual info about base lodging but not specifically campgrounds. If you can get them to advertise or at least list this site, you may see a significant rise in business.

Worth a try I guess.

I've tried to contact military.com many times. They currently use the Army's "Paths Across America" (old) website. They have failed to repsond to any of my inquiries about a relationship here.

I'm brand new to this forum, but I wanted to add a thought I had while reading.

First, I'd be willing to donate a free program to an AD member returning from Iraq or Afghanistan.

Second, regarding how to get the info disseminated and the AD member's status verified I would suggest working through the MWR or equivalent department for each service. Would that be too cumbersome?

OK, now that I've taken the first leap maybe I'll be able to contribute a bit more in this forum.
