A bad experience. Make no mistake this is a nice campground albeit expensive at $30 a night. However, I just had a disturbing experience that has left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. When we left home for Cheatham the forecast was for wet weather but not too bad and Hurricane Joaquin was going to stay well out to sea. The night we arrived things changed dramatically. Rainfall was now predicted to be 6 to 9 inches with severe flooding and Hurricane Joaquin was now predicted to pass directly over Tidewater and head up the Chesapeake Bay to DC as a Cat 1 or 2 storm. So we left early to prepare our home for heavy weather. I knew Cheatham (CAX) would not do a refund for early departure but I fully expected they would at least credit us with 4 days at some future date due to the circumstances under which we had to leave early. NOT SO! If you leave early you are stuck for the entire tab no matter what the reason! Keep in mind this is the off season and campers are sparse. I left a voice mail for the office supervisor to confirm this unwelcome news. Needless to say there was no return call. My advice: if there is the slightest chance that you may experience an emergency during your stay whether it is a death in the family, illness, earthquake, tornado or Hurricane you will receive no consideration from MWR management. I recommend staying at a commercial campground. So thanks CAX please spend my $120 wisely.
Bath rooms and showers dirty. Trash not emptied. Never cleaned the two weeks we were there. The old RV area is tent camping only now. Laundry room also dirty. Never cleaned. Trash can was full and stayed full. Recommend NOT getting a space in the row facing the bath house. Unless you want to hear the kids banging on the electronic noise maker play station. This located by the bathrooms. If you take space #43 or some of those across from the bath house, you will hear this noise. Also noise from get togethers in, and outside of, the community room located by the bath rooms. No designated handicap spaces. Handicap spaces should be close to the bath house. Location is great. Close to Williamsburg and other things to see/do in the Tide Water area. We ate at the Coast Guard Galley (at USCG base Yorktown) a few times. Meal price has gone up! from three bucks year or so ago to $7.70 per person now.
Nice place to visit Williamburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. Good facilities, cable power etc. Not much on base, very small shopette and gas station. Con, prices for laundry were twice as high at the campground vs the laundry at the shopette. Go to shopette laundry to wash cloths.
June-July 2015 Summer Vacation
This month we stayed at the Cheatham Annex Naval Supply Station in Yorktown, just outside of Williamsburg Virginia. It was one of the most amazing military campgrounds we have stayed at so far. Even as a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids) we all enjoyed it and plan on returning again each Summer! The staff is friendly and very helpful, the neighboring campers are always a pleasure and everyone said hello, and the campground is beautiful and super clean!

Visited the campground without the camper to check it out. Cement sites with full hook ups including cable TV. Nice personnel in MWR office. Price increase, now $25. Good place to camp if you want to see Williamsburg/Yorktown, etc. We will camp there the middle of August. Will give another comment after that campout.

Reservations were simple and easy over the phone, I made ours about two weeks in advance. Main gate has some obstacles/barriers but not real difficult to get around, military ID will be required to get on base. Check-in to MWR outdoors prior to heading to campground, they are on "D" street, turn left when you see base gas station. The lot of the MWR outdoors has a drive around so no need to worry about pulling in and turning around. If you like to take photos, as my wife does, take them now as there is no need to come back to the MWR for anything else. The do have some stuffed animals inside. I was assigned a spot for the campground but was told by the folks at MWR that if I liked another spot better just go ahead and take it, just give them a call to let them know which spot I would be in. I was assigned spot 10 on the first row coming into the campground, this is where the majority of campers were. We took spot 31 instead, only one row from the bath house. All spots are concrete pads with 20/30/50 amp service, cable TV, sewer, water, picnic table, and fire ring/grill. WIFI is available for free, on average I was getting 2 MBPS download and 1 MBPS upload, not bad but not for videos. It was spotty at times but generally acceptable. Morning and evening colors were played loud enough to hear over any noise you may be making inside or outside your camper. There is a nice wide trail through the woods by the campground which is good for hiking, not very demanding. There is no camp host or on site presence of authority, all things go through MWR, they were friendly, courteous, and professional. There are six individual bathrooms with shower, sink and toilet, and a laundry room with 3 washers and dryers, $1.50 per load. The bathrooms and laundry are in the same new building along with a community/get together room. The bathrooms and laundry could use attention more often, for being brand new I was expecting a clean environment. Overall it is tough not to be impressed with this new facility, we loved the location and will definitely stay here again in the future.

Outstanding stay over the Christmas Holiday. Location is a big plus if you want to visit any of the attractions on the peninsula. The sites are set-up like they should be. The amenity posts are all lit. There are separate breakers for each amp level. Water fixtures appear to be new. The sewage pipes are set in concrete with flip-top caps. The only knock I could find was our sewage pipe was not threaded. Not a big deal for us. The common areas were clean and appeared to be well kept. They do play the National Anthem in the mornings and Taps in the evening. Again, not a problem for us. From the check-in clerk to the gate guards, every person we came in contact with was courteous and a pleasure to deal with. I did see some spots that were not completely level, as reported in another review, but there weren't that many. If you are prepared for uneven spots, like so many other places have, then these shouldn't be an issue. We will definitely be using this facility every time we visit the area. FWIW, it also appeared that the cabins are a hit with many. They were packed!
