This FamCamp has a HomeSteader subculture. While they tell you that you can only stay two weeks and then you have to get out and get in line -- on a first-come, first-served basis, it turns out that the quasi-homesteaders are able to go into the MWR office early and pre-pay for a specific site. I was forced to move from a site after I had already gotten set up, even though there was another open site, because one of the homesteaders said I was in "his" site. It wasn't good enough that there was another site available -- I was in "his" site that he had pre-paid for earlier in the week. I left. If MARB wants to make this a homestead campground, fine...just tell us ahead of time so we don't waste our time.

The gate issue is still an issue, but not horrible. The CG itself was quiet, well-maintained, and seemed to have several sites availble even though reservations are accepted (most are the new, asphalt sites). Level pads; even the gravel drives are good, and I saw only two sites that still had water-issues, but they weren't terrible. The laundry is clean and prices reasonable, and the showers are adequate. The comissary has an okay selection of organics. THERE IS NOTHING FOR KIDS; no playground, no youth center, not even a vacant lot nearby. But, it made a nice home base to see Joshua Tree Ntl. Park, and go to Six Flags Magic Mtn!

March has recently added 10 additional full hookup (20/30/50a - W/S) sites in part of the old parking lot. Sites backup to a grassy area and are all hard asphault. Sites are wide enough for motorhome/trailer plus toad. Access to March is good and hasn't changed, although they are working on it. The snowbirds will appreciate the availability of the extra sites this winter.

The only negative we experienced was the low spots in the campground road when the rains came. Just like having lakefront property. I believe that situation is being addressed. They apparently have the money but not the manpower. Otherwise it is a super Famcamp. Management is fair and impartial and firm when they have to be. Sites are 10 paved back-ins and 10 gravel pull-thrus with 30/50 A full hookups, with a dump station for dry campers. Never had to dry camp more than 3 days.

We were lucky and happened to be pulling in just as someone was leaving a full hook-up site on a weekend. We were advised that on weekends it is a first-come, first-served basis. There are several dry-camp spaces available also. Good, clean and level sites. However, roadway in FamCamp does collect rain water in some areas. We plan on visiting again in future. Registration office (March INN) is several blocks away.

We used this base as a short term storage for our motorhome when we took a trip overseas for a month. We stayed in dry camp the first couple of days as full hook ups were taken. We made arrangements with staff to place our rig in storage, $30 for the month, then we moved the rig to the fenced lot they told us to go to. We felt our rig would be very secured while we were gone; on base, and in a locked facility. When we returned we were lucky enough to get a full hook up site. Campground is almost always full.
