Views are beautiful. But, not much to do on Island other than hunting and fishing. Camping on base: There are four (4) full hook up sites and four (4) dry camping spaces. $30 for full hook up spaces and $15 for dry spaces / day. It is Alaska....land of expensive.... So, in the lower 48 I would say the spaces are not worth $30 and $15. All the spaces are located in former base housing quarter's parking lots. The parking lot for the former housing buildings. Hook up spaces (1-4) are in one of the former parking lots. Dry spaces have individual spaces. Full hook up space are 1, 2, 3, and 4. You park parallel to the "curb." May have to wiggle into the space. The dry spaces are in individual former housing parking lots. Dry spaces are A, B, C and D. You have the entire lot to yourself. As stated by J.L, there is nothing out there. Base police (USCG Police) patrol the camping area. Camping area is located on "open" base area. No gate guards. When heading back to town from main base, turn left where all the containers are stacked up. This stack is just beyond the airport. Office is located in the Lodge (base lodging). Nice staff. While camping you can use the laundry (free) at the Lodge. Also, use ice machine and wifi at the Lodge. Retired are authorized to eat at the Galley on base proper. ID required. Saw many family members in the galley with sponsor. Food is good. But not up to quality of what used to be served in the Galley. Air viewing Island/Bear watching tours are EXPENSIVE. Not much in town. Most locals have a "don't care" attitude towards non Islanders. Don't expect great customer service in town from the locals. They don't care. Gas station (self service) is located on main base. Ran by CG EXCHANGE. Gym is great. Good for showers if dry camping. Towels are issued at Gym. Pizza Parlor has fast wifi. Free. Pizza Parlor is in same building with the Galley. CG Exchange is well stocked. Commissary (across street from Gym/Galle area) is closed on Mon and Tue. This is a small commissary. But has everything you may need for your stay.
