Fairways RV Resort

We were again skeptical about this CG, given some of the negative reviews. We found the facility in decent shape. I’ve seen greener grass, but is watered and NOT brown. The gentleman that checked us in, Nick, I believe is his name was very pleasant and helpful. I also find the price very competitive compared to the civilian options. It’s California and compared to many other Western States, it’s expensive (military sites included). There were some homesteaders, but that’s a reality at most of the military CG. I don’t see it as a resort, but we’d not hesitate to stay there again if we were in the area.

We had hoped that when the price went up from $30 to $40 a day that the money would be put towards repair of sites and general maintenance, but no such luck. One of the laundry rooms is closed because a washer has been broken for some time, grass is not regularly trimmed and the bushes that had been cut back two years ago are again beginning to clog the spaces where you walk dogs. The screen that had protected the RV park from the gold course is falling into disrepair. Park rules have changed. Used to be that they allowed a maximum of two dogs, but the rules (that you need to sign) no longer say two dogs max. There was a move to limit "homesteaders" BY SAYING 30 DAYS MAX STAY "UNLESS THERE ARE VACANCIES", but the park was half empty, so if somebody could afford $40 a day they could stay forever. The location is the biggest plus for us, along with the nice commissary and NEX. I think though that if SeaBreeze in Seal Beach has not raised their rates, we would stay there and not come to Port Hueneme.

It looks like someone spent a ton of money to build a really nice park and now is just watching it get run into the ground. All of the grass between sites has turned to weeds, and its very ugly, plus not pleasant to walk on. The laundry room is a mess, with lots of broken machines (but they are free to use...). It's not particularly easy to get to, with a few miles of driving on surface streets. The office staff appear to be trying to do their jobs, but they just don't know how - they were kind of snippy. The wifi is pretty bad, but I had no trouble with Verizon. If they were charging $20 a night, you could overlook all that, but $40 is just ridiculous for what they have here. On the bright side, the sites are large and the commissary is great for such a small base. Also, the golf course, while looking a little sad, is fun to play, and much more reasonably priced than the park. From the back corner of the park, it's about a minute walk to get to the clubhouse. When I visited, there was almost no one on the course, including on weekends. So if you want a golf holiday, this might not be a bad place to stay, but I wouldn't recommend the park to anyone else. 

This park has been given high ratings in the past which is hard to fully understand. First of all it is very expensive $40 a night. For this, the internet is almost useless, there is no cell coverage in the area. TV signals are very weak also, and there is no cable tv. Normally I just use my cell service to stream when in campgrounds like this, but the cell coverage for my provider (ATT) was too weak. The office says they are in a cell hole, so I suspect the same may be true for other carriers. The lawns are dead, the sprinkler system has been broken, and they say it's too expensive to fix. The facilities are clean, however much of the amenities (BBQ, washers, dryers) were broken. Access to the park is easy through the main gate, and there is diesel at the station right there are you leave. If they charged the typical fee of $10-20 a day, I could understand this; however at $40 a night I expect more. The park was only about 1/4 full at this time. Nonetheless, for the long term stays, they make you leave anyhow after 30 days. Wasn't a issue for me, but others there were complaining.

We had read some previous reviews that weren't so inviting so was a little apprehensive until arrival. However, we were surprised at how wrong we felt the previous reviewers were or how much it must have changed. This park looked amazing when we first drove in. There are many pull-thru sites here. They sites appeared well taken care of with fresh green grass. There were two dog parks. Neither had water by the dog parks to help with clean-up nor did they have bags or a garbage can. We did use the laundry by check-in. It was FREE to campers. There were two washers. One was broken and appeared to have been broken for some time. There were four dryers and two were broken. The location here was perfect. The commissary and NEX were good sized and there were plenty of activities on and off base. Beaches were close. Maintenance staff and host were friendly and always seemed to be working on one thing or another. WI-Fi worked great. A negative -- Office staff ... not so friendly. There were two in the office at check-in and the brunette was a little curt. I wasn't in a hurry to go back there at all. It would have been nice to have received a map of the area. We thought this a nice place and would consider returning if in the area. Yep, it was $40 a night!! Oh, one more thing, I really hate calling NavyBeds for reservations. They are hard to understand depending who helps you. They must be timed on each call because they talk so fast and try to get so much in. I've found it much better to call directly to the park, if possible.

Most of the below reviews have many things that I agree with but overall I found the park nice. I got caught up with the price increase from $30 to $40. Even though my reservation said $30 they said sorry we had a price increase April 1st. The commissary and exchange are well stocked and clean. The laundry is free and so is the ice but the machine by us was broken. We were in site 47 with a 43 foot 5th wheel close to the laundry and dog park.

I marked Amenities/Facilities and Value down for two reasons. The lack of any grass, particularly in the new area, and the 30% increase in cost (now $40) will give us pause before we stay here again. It is one of the highest we have experienced. Having said that, the staff and facilities are excellent and have always been very helpful and courteous.

BE ADVISED, THE RATES FOR MILITARY/RETIREES HAS GONE FROM $30 TO $40 PER NIGHT, BOTH HERE AND POINT MUGU. Unfortunately, as with other military parks, the site fees do not seem to come back to the park. I noticed several sites with cones in them, indicating they are not open for campers, either because of electrical or water problems. Also, most of the grass is gone from sites, leaving dirt and weeds. I spoke with one of the maintenance men and he said that they are beginning a project to clean up the plants and trees which had begun to cover areas where people walk their dogs. While the description says that the sites are 40'long some sites are longer than others. In the older part, we are able to park our 45' RV with no problems. I also agree with the LK23 reviewer, there are still sites which look cluttered, even though the rules do not allow that. It is better though than in past years. The park staff have always been helpful and friendly at check-in and if I have any questions. One lady in particular, Sue, has been there for years and is always friendly when you stop in at the office. With the price hike to $40 though, we are going to look at a different park for our December trip in 2018. 

We have stayed at Fairways RV Park many times in the past. This is the first time we find the campground in a state of poor repair. Almost all the grass and some of the palm trees in the new section are dead from lack of water. It is basically dirt and a few weeds around the concrete pads. When you check in, the office staff hands you a list of campground regulations with a verbal warning to follow the rules, yet there is obviously no enforcement of the rules. When walking through the campground we observed the following: clutter around many campsites, multiple vehicles parked at campsites, parking on the grass (or dirt) and large, aggressive dogs that are specifically prohibited in the regulations. The regulations do not specifically prohibit parking on the grass or dirt. I found I could not park my tow vehicle next my RV without two wheels on the dirt. I asked the office if this was OK and was told no. In my walk through the campground, I counted 14 vehicles parked off the concrete, some with all four wheels on the dirt. The occupancy was around 30-35 RVs. And be warned. Most every campsite has small invasive ants, typically around the utility hookups. Some campers had a circle of Comet cleanser around their RV and others were spraying Ortho Defense almost daily. Otherwise, this is a decent campground in a great location, close to the beach and close to restaurants and shopping in Ventura. On the positive side, the dog run received a lot of attention while we were there. The grass was watered, bushy shrubs removed and trees were trimmed up to 5 to 6 feet off the ground—a 100% improvement. At least the campground cares for the dogs. Before departing, the office staff gave us a letter from the Navy MWR Recreation Director announcing that the RV Park daily rates will increase on December 15, 2017. We were verbally told the rate was increased by $10 per day. We stayed 30 days in November and the occupancy rate was roughly 50%. I am guessing that the occupancy rate will be much less at this campground when it is priced at $40 per night. 

I am a retired DOD Civilian and my wife and I arrived on 4/2/2017. We were passed through the gate and welcomed by the camp host. Although the park could use some maintenance, we considered it adequate. On returning from a shopping trip Monday afternoon, we were stopped at the main gate and my wife was refused admittance. We were told that a retired DOD civilian could not sponsor anyone on base. My wife (a Navy veteran) spent the night in a motel. We moved to Seal Beach the following day and it turned out to be a much nicer park.

Weeds, Weeds and More Weeds. The pictures are way out of date, looks like someone cut way back on grounds keeping, dry weed infested sites, full of burs. Grass is gone way of the weeds, dead trees due to my guess of a lack of water. Poor shape from what it used to be when looking at comments. I will not waste my money here. We just came from Seabreeze RV south of here at Seal Beach, the grounds have grass, were mowed and kept up, a night and day comparison. If you're coming from the North, just keep going south. The only thing this base does have a commissary and exchange, so if you have to stop, stay one night, get gas, stock up and move to Seabreeze.

Unbelievable. If you are planning on getting any mail while you are here...dont. No post office on base. Mail does not get delivered to camp ground. Staff must go into town to pick up the mail and that is a big if not when. Grounds keeping is far and wide. One day the mow 2 spaces, and weed trim another and than leaf blow another. Now when they weed trim they do a 10 foot section and skip 5 feet and start again. Management is not on site so you have young government employees unsupervised. Nobody can give you a straight answer when asked a question. There is a camp host but I have never seen anyone moveing around there. Now concrete pads, yes you would think on a seabee base they would have been level, no such luck, they slope left and crown in the middle with each end being different heights getting level requires one end of your motorhome to have the wheels up in the air, plan on a lot of blocking under the tires. It seems to me that with a little TLC this could and would be a great location to stay. Keep in mind this location is one of the most expensive Military camp locations I have been to. Golf course is playable at best again another location on this base that could use some structure and management. Employees are not the friendliest. The amazing point of this is I spent 27 years in the military with my last deployment in Iraq. Either the military is changing but in my day a military base was clean neat and well maintained.This whole base could use some structure and care. Perhaps with all the cuts in the navy taking pride in your base and duty station is not the case with the navy. a good wind good blow this place to the ground.
