This was my very first stay at any military campground and I plan on many more. Pelican Roost is a very nice facility although its a little breezy at times. The roost had 2 big screen TVs and several computers for campers use, plus free wifi and laundry. While there I enjoyed the ice cream social and pot luck. I was a little disappointed that the fast food franchises on the base charged our military men and women higher prices than was charged in the same franchises farther away from the base. In my days of active duty back in the late 60's there were no fast food franchises at all at my homeport of San Diego, so I was susprised to see them. Also when I was on active duty, the prices for gas and groceries on base were always less on base than in town, but today I didn't notice any savings at all at the exchange or gas station, in fact gas was higher on base. I was also lucky to be given a tour of one of the DDG's, a couple days later I thought I would try and get a tour of one of the CA's, but could not get past the guards at the chain link fence. I was also susprised to see that base security is no longer done by US Marines.
