Mayport Navy Sub Base's Osprey Cove

Mayport Navy Sub Base's Osprey Cove was created by jsummers
I just found this thread about Osprey Cove. Wish I'd seen it earlier but I didn't know to look for it. I know why the host at Pelican Roost wants the Osprey Cove info removed. I found out today. I made reservations at Pelican Roost a month ago for a stay of 6 wks. I emailed Saturday to check on my confirm number. Sunday morn I got an email telling me that I was told I was put in Osprey Cove because I asked for > 30 days. I couldn't even find any info about Osprey Cove on the Pelican Roost page. it took me some time, since the only "blue dot" on the Fla map takes you to Pelican Roost. I wrote him back real quick saying I sure didn't want Osprey Cove, he didn't tell me anything about Osprey Cove when I reserved & asking him to pls reduce the stay of my reservation and put me into Pelican Roost. Of course I didn't hear back.
It looks like to me he doesn't want anyone to know that this "no facilities place" called Osprey Cove exisits. He wants it to be the overflow or the long term stay location that he controls, without anyone knowing it exists. I am surprised that no Osprey Cove note is tacked to the Pelican Roost page so I'd know that it was on the same base. But the important thing is, I found out. If you are reserving at Pelican Roost, BEWARE. Ask specifically if you are being put into Osprey Cove. I still have time to get my money back. You may not.

We stayed there at the cove this past January, actually the info about it being a spot for long term stays was pretty well known. They had told us that they already had plans for a clubhouse and laundry in the "Cove". We were told it should be ready before the next winter season. My guess is is that it is not ready yet, as few projects are rarely done on time with the military, especially where CG improvments are concerned. Actually in many respects the "Cove" is a far better place as you don't have the Natzi hosts there that are at the Roost, and you are not jam packed in at the Cove. I would kinda like to stay at the Roost for a week or so, but for a longer stay, the cove is actually pretty decent.

This has been corrected. Since the two campgrounds are close together, it's hard to see the 2nd dot. But moving your mouse over the displayed dot will display either campground's name to select from.

Are you guys saying that one guy controls (two) both MCGs and he puts you wherever HE wants you to go, even if it's in another MCG ... I must be reading this wrong -- or is this another situation like MacDill, with two sections run by the same office ...

Mayport is a Naval Station. The Sub Base is up the road in GA.

Naval Station Mayport has two sections of their RV Park. The first one Pelican
Roost was the original and still the most popular. A couple years back (2 or 3 at most), they realized that they were so popular and that they had so many users, that they looked into also using the "Old Mobile Home Park" that had been un-used for about 5 years. The main concern was that it was in the middle of base housing and they didn't want a lot of RV traffic coming and going every day. So the command decided to use it for RVers that planned to stay for 28 days or more. Originally there was no time limit on how long you could stay, but this has since changed to 4 months (I think that is the current max). The CG manager uses the Roost as the headquarters as there is no clubhouse over at the Cove yet. There are two "camp hosts" at the cove that do an excellent job of hosting. They are there when you check in and help you get settled and try to answer any and all question and concerns, then help you into your spot and then they are off doing maintenance.
In our month at the Cove, they were seen out and about all the time, however no one had any complaints or issues with them. They would stop and talk to you about the latest gossip, and what was going on with the future of the Cove etc. They were not the CG Natzies that are found at the Roost. These two hosts EARNED their bennies. The Cove had been over run by neglect for 5 years of being abandoned and they workd very hard to keep the vegitation and such cut back and worked at making the facilities usable to everyone.
The spot we were in had so much mold/mildew on the cement pad (the RV's were parked on the grass and the cement pads were for the the BBQ, tables, etc), and sidewalk that it was almost slipery to walk on. We borrowed a pressure washer and cleaned it off ourselves. I say this so that you get an idea of the conditions that they had to work with.
In the near future when Mayport gets a "Carrier" or when they finish with their plans to be "Nucular" capable they will again become a major active base, however right now there are just a hand full of ships stationed there and there are a lot of empty units in the base housing.
sorry about the mis-spelling, could not find spell checker.
