Tricare question. was created by JLitton
We are currently enrolled in Tricare Prime, can you switch back and forth between prime and standard? Just wondering what to do if we travel more outside of our area. TIA

I'm not positive, but I think if you leave Prime, you have to wait a year before you can return. There's a very good article on this website and some discussions in these forums on using Tricare Prime or Standard for travelers.

I am TriCare Prime and we also travel extensively in our RV. A few months ago I had a serious URI and needed attention while traveling. I called TriCare and they gave me the name of a local clinic and said just get your Primary Care MD to send in an authorization to TriCare and that is what we did and it worked out just fine. I also had to go to the ER for chest pain and as long as you let your Primary Care MD know in 24 hours again no problem. Just thought I would let you know Prime can work if you travel extensively.

We're in Coffeyville, KS (out of Tricare Prime area). We tried to get a referral from our PCM who wouldn't refer us unless we first returned to Utah for a visit!! We were given the opportunity to disenroll and just use Tricare Standard. We also have had the opportunity to enroll and disenroll at will (or at least that's what we understood). If dropped due to nonpayment, you do need to wait a year.
