Work Camping

I've been traveling the country on my dime for the last couple of years, but have decided that the chief-of-staff and I would like to get someone else to contribute to that expense. So with that in mind, does anyone have any suggestions on seasonal or part time work camper jobs?

I am familar with the workcamper website, but I'm not interested in paying to compete with a zillion others looking for one or two camp hosts jobs that require cleaning toilets for a free campsite.

We are not beneath that task, but an employer would certainly be wasting our combined talents if that were the main job requirement.

If you're bypassing subscribing to the Workamper News, then you're bypassing a HUGE source of informatiion on a variety of seasonal jobs. You might get lucky asking people and forums but the Workamper News offers you THOUSANDS of opportunities across the nation to choose from. It's a small investment to open up many opportunities.

Yes, most jobs are camp hosting jobs that require you to clean bathrooms. But not all. There's many other jobs available. For the past 4 years, we've obtained 5 seasonal jobs from the Workamper News. While my wife currently is a camp host, which invloves cleaning 8 toilets, she LOVES her job. She could have been office staff, but she enjoys working outdoors with campers. I've never cleaned a toilet in these past 4 years (swept a few bathrooms, though). For the past two years, I've been a manager of 15 National Forest campgrounds. A job I got through Workamper News.

Sure - MOST seasonal jobs are wasting peoples talents (including mine). They're not looking for high level executives or top level skilled technicians that demand high salaries. Most seasonal jobs are looking for workers with good people skills that can get the job done witn minimal training and supervision. Most seasonal jobs pay close to minimum wage (or even under minimum if they consider your RV site part of compensation). Yes, there are also those seasonal jobs that want you to work free for a free RV site. We dont even apply for a seasonal job unless it includes a free FHU site, 40 hours paid work a week (each), and pays above minimum wage and is located in a scenic location. We've never had problems finding a seasonal job. However, we now like the company we're with and returned this year. We'll probably return again next year.

Well you could try calling national parks and talking to peoples about working VIP. Or go to www.volunteer.gov/gov/ and see if you can get a job somewhere. I work interp for them which is basically a visitor center welcome person or host. Now most of them will give you a rv space with full hookups for 32 hours a week of work. Not hard work either and you get to see the park, parts of the park that visitors dont get to see and you can spend your days off touring the local areas. Now some of them also pay you a stippance for lunch. It can be anywhere from 5 to 25 dollars a day. The wife and I bank 400 dollars a month while I work figuring that is what we would have been paying for an rv park to stay for a month. Use that money to go from one park to another or for our next excursion out and about.

If you are interested I know of two parks that pay a stippance and one of them is always looking for vips. Let me know.

We're not looking for an income producing job. I can stay at home and go to work if it were. My goal is to pay for fuel and maybe get a free site. The military work ethic is something I think every employer would want. Sometimes I think the prospective employer thinks we are "over qualified." We don't mind getting our hands dirty and also like working outside. Perhaps, I need to doctor down the resume.

Larry> Permit me to rephrase two of my first comments. I should have said wasting my "basic" talents. And we'll clean bathrooms, only not just for a free site. We've got that t-shirt.

Looks like I need to subscribe to the publication. I have been sorta chasing my tail doing the research at multiple sites.

We took the camp host position at Camp Lejeune (Onslow Beach) for several reasons:

• It sounded like fun
  
• Our campsite was 200 yards from the ocean
  
• Fuel had just become expensive so we thought we would travel less until the crisis is over
  
• Our family is only 2 hours away

Since I retired last October, I have had no interest in getting back into full-time higher stress positions. Yes, I have to straighten up the two rest rooms on weekends, but I find the work not demeaning at all. It puts a lot of things into perspective.

And I was right, the job has been great fun working with young Marines, old farts like myself and generally enjoying life at a much more leisurely pace.
