Boondocking on Military Bases

We are currently in AZ for the winter and there are tens of thousands of boondockers here. I wonder how many military installations around the country will allow boondocking and for how long? If the count is high may be Larry could add a section to the campground section to cover it. Is parking in a NEX/BX/PX parking lot Boondocking?

I have not heard of any that allow boondocking except those that have recreations sites with no hookups. And there are a few that have those. And I think there are a couple in AZ as well.

I've wondered this same topic. I've heard of some people getting away with parking in a quiet section of a base, or near the chapel, etc. But I've also heard of others who get rousted by security. While I've never attempted it, the best option is to ask at the base gate if it's allowed, and where. I have heard of this working at some National Guard bases. One person even had an electrical hookup, but it was next to an active train track.

If we do discover that overnight parking is allowed, I'd LOVE to include a section here covering the locations and rules. But I wouldn't refer to this as "boondocking". I'm thinking it's more along the lines of parking overnight the same as one would in a Walmart. If long term boondocking is allowed, then I would add that as an approved military campground location.

Larryf, if you do a search on the Escapees Boondocking Forum for Eglin AFB there is some info on Jackson Guard having some boondocking. I do not know anything about it other than what is mentioned there.

I think you can add McChord AFB as having a boondock area. The overflow is available for $5 a day (last I checked) They will offer hook-up sites as they become available, if you want. Several times I have turned down hook-ups as it wasn't worth it to move for a day or two.

Not sure what exactly we're meaning here by "boondocking" -- and not the definition, but the areas.

Many bases have MCG's and an "Overflow" -- which would be considered "boondocking" with the no HU ... but are we talking a base that has no MCG and just allows an area that anyone passing through can stay overnight in a camper??

That would be different than an overflow -- and along this line, I'd wonder if ALL bases, or most bases would allow anyone (with ID of course) passing through to just stay on base overnight and then move on. Sort of as a traveling convenience ... and am wondering how security treats that -- I mean just "parking" on base and moving on next day, rather than a structured "stop-over" ... anyone have any experience with this ... as security or MP maybe.
