Have a friend that is a private pilot and owns his plane. We want to meet in California ... and am wondering if he can land (He's not AD or Ret Mil) on a military base if I'm at the MCG there.

Not sure which one yet, but if one does and one doesn't, then I'd stay where he can land ... anyone know the rules for this?? Thx

i would call the base commander and ask and get permission
because i suspect the answer is NO Nope and NO

if the base has a flying club, it might be easier
but with no flying club onboard i bet its a nope, sorry

Since 9/11, it's tough to get on base for ANY civilian in a POV. Especially since the acts were carried out by aircraft, I would suspect that there's no way any wing commander would allow a civilian to fly an aircraft onto his base. I agree with the other post...it's in your interest to ask the question as you have nothing to lose, but just don't get your hopes up. Good LUCK!

In addition to being a military pilot, I was also a civilian one with all commercial ratings. I ccassionally 'freelanced' with a company who did have permission to land at mil airfields. Military status is not a criteria for gaining permission to land at a military airfield. The are several requirements for gaining permission to do so, but are not worth the hassle for a one time event. The one that would dissuade most is the insurance requirement. Astronomic in most cases.

An alternate would be to find a joint use airport. One where both military and commercial aircraft can use it. The fact that it is 'commercial' makes getting permission somewhat easier, but still usually not worth the effort for one time use.

Neveran easy answer to and easy question, is there.

Will tell more - MY buddy owns several airplanes, and operates an aircraft parts business that sells to Feds, and private ...

And he flie all over the place - just don't know if he lands at military airfields - guess I shoulda asked him first if he can ... Hmmm

I'm sure he hs clearance etc - I jsut thought it would be - get a plane permit, just like a car permit ... and all set. Forgot about the high secrity for incoming aircraft ...

SO, will ask him first - what we wanted to do was invite him to fly in a visit us when we get out to the west, as we'll be staying at MCGs, so that would be very convenient.

So, will go ask him if he knows... might be, he already has clearance with his company ... M44

I'd have him land at a local general aviation airport and rent a car. A whole simpler IMHO.
