Chow Hall

There's no place like a military dining facility for S.O.S; eggs and hash browns for breakfast. Does anyone know if military retirees can eat at the chow hall(s)? Would this be something the famcamp host would/should know?
Where could we check at each base/post to see if we can chow down?

Host should know and your fellow campers at the campground probably will know. We find there is no set rule about dining facilities allowing us to eat there and it can change from one visit to the next. Just ask when you check-in as most hosts or office personnel are very knowledgeable about what you can and cannot do on each installation.

4/20/2010 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFRNS) -- Thanks to the Air Force's Food Transformation Initiative, retirees at six bases will soon be able to use military food service establishments previously reserved for active-duty Airmen.

Retirees will pay the same market price as everyone else, and there will not be an added surcharge on top of the menu price.

The six Air Force bases participating in the initiative are Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, Patrick AFB, Fla., MacDill AFB, Fla., Fairchild AFB, Wash., Little Rock AFB, Ark., and Travis AFB, Calif.

If you haven't eaten in a dining facility in some time, know that they have progressed a long way from the old "chow hall." Altho, the S.O.S breakfast is still a cholestrol nightmare.

You'll typically find modern day dining facilities roughly equal to a buffet style resturant with excellent food, service, and less expensive than at a commercial resturant.

I can't help with individual facility policies for retirees, but I had no problem using two Air Force dining halls during a recent trip in CO and TX. One CG office new the answer. One did not.

FOr those of you that use this (and we would occasionally if available) what percentage of bases allow retired to eat at mess hall??

Anyone know if it is more or less allowed, depending on branch of service??

Ellsworth AFB does not appear on the list above, but does allow retirees to eat in its Bandit Inn Dining Facility.
