RV Rentals was created by kayla7231
Hi all,
My husband is active duty navy and right now we are looking at a 21 day leave period this summer in between duty stations.. our idea is to rent an rv and do a little sight seeing. Our budget is probably around 5,000 for the rental, gas, campgrounds, mileage, etc. I thought that was a lot, but I guess not looking at quotes on some popular websites!! I was hoping to find rentals within an mwr or campground, does anyone know of any?? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Kayla

Do you need a 'drivable' RV, or a towable RV?? IF you have a PU or SUV to tow - that would be less expensive. Regardless, $5000 for 21 days seems pretty high to me ... altho, haven't done it so don't know.
Most bases have rentable trailers at the MWR offices. If not, they might know of a MH-RV rental in the area where you are interested.
If you check this site for MCG locations in the area where you want to travel, then contact MWR on that base and ask.

The biggest single expense if you travel any distance will be your fuel cost. Most motor homes of any size that are gas will probably only give you 6-8 MPG. So do not minimize the cost or moving your rental unit from place to place.

when i have seen class A or Cs rentals, what really adds on is the per mileage charge. one option migth be just to look at some of the campgrounds that have on site rentals, and then do day trips. just be careful of some of their conditions. just my 2 cents worth

On the lighter side; have you watched the movie RV with Robin Williams? It will give you an idea of the hilarious and frustrating things you can deal with if you have never travelled in any kind of RV. I say go for it and have fun but be sure you are given a thorough walk-thru and explanation of how every system works. You may want to consider putting it all on video and audio during the walk-thru and explanation as it can be overwhelming for a newbie. Also think about spending a night or two close to the rental agency so if you have problems you can go back to them without ruining your vacation/leave before it actually starts.
Now that you have found this website you have a definite advantage on getting help if you need it while on your journey as we have all been through many problems you will encounter and can help you.

At over $200/day, I am also thinking that the cost for 21 days is expensive. I suspect one could buy a decent pre-owned towable RV on Craigslist for half that total amount.
Occasionally, we will forgo the RV and just stay at MWR lodging facilities in the vicinity of where we are traveling. Sometimes it's cheaper than paying for the fuel for the rig. Obviously, the AF and Army have more choices for lodging, but here are a couple sites we have used in the past that allow us to get off the beaten path.

If the idea is just to include RVing in the trip, then I'd concur with the idea of checking with a MWR facility on a military installation that does have RV rentals if you have a vehicle with which to tow. If not, then many larger RV dealers generally have rental RVs of all types that are a bit cheaper than one of the national RV rental companies.
Good luck.
