This is a nice location, right by Coronado and NASNI and easy to get to San Diego things like the zoo and beaches. But as a tent camper it was not ideal. The two tent spots are just gravel spots in the median, far from the bathrooms, and very expensive for tent sites ($58/night). For RVs it looks really nice though. It felt very safe, which was what I was after, but probably won't stay here again for how expensive...
So we went here YEARS ago and it was not much, very small, primitive, and no amenities. Also the nearest gate closes early. But the location in Colorado Springs is nice. But last year we tried to stay here and it was all fenced off for a complete overhaul. I think they renamed it Camp Hale and now there are cabins and RV spaces with hookups, laundry, etc. they just reopened last month (May 2024) and I'm excited to go...
Currently closed and gated off, supposedly for renovations but I couldn't get any information on when they will reopen. No one was actually there working and every phone number I tried to call was no longer in service. (Editor's Note: Big Bear Recreation Facility will re-open on April 1st, 2024. Online reservations will be accepted starting February 1st, 2024.)
Dry camping only, but the view is amazing. Really can't be beat. You can use the bathroom at the boat house, but other than that there's not much there. But the view and the safety of being on base is well worth it.
