We did NOT stay in the Eielson AFB trailers, but did stay, in our class C, for 3 days at the host RV park: Eagle's Rest. The park is located in the town of Valdez within easy walking distance of most of the town. There is a Safeway grocery and a Tesoro Gas/Convenience store within 100 yards of the park. Nicely located park right on Choctawhatchee Bay across from Destin Florida. As noted previously, there is a toll bridge to get to Destin ($5 RT), which gets to be an expensive pain as most of the tourist attractions are in Destin. They have laundry, fitness area (small and 2 of the 3 machines were broken while we were there), and wifi at the "fitness center" location and one other. Shields is in a great location and is very popular. They seem to always be full and folks sometimes need to move to different sites, if they don't have reservations, or aren't able to make reservations for the whole season. We were next to some folks who were on a non-sewer site and have moved 11 times in 2 months. The staff, especially Charles, do a wonderful job of juggling sites and trying to accommodate people. Once again, can't praise this park enough. Facility is great and the staff are excellent. Spent time with Bill, Camp Host, since we arrived on a weekend. He has some great advice, i.e., go to the nearby Walmart for diesel fuel where it was .20 less/gallon than on base, directions to base facilities, directions into the base, etc. Thanks Bill. Stayed here one night on the way to Big Bend National Park. A little tough getting in because the gate indicated on the link is shut down on weekends, however a call to the campground got us directions to an alternate gate and the campground staff came and opened the gate for us. Stayed for 2 days. Sites are great: roomy, concrete pads, full hookups. Staff are great - very friendly and helpful. Suggested we call before arrival for directions which were needed because the main road from the base proper is still flooded and not repaired.
