Was trying to decide between Holloman and Fort Bliss for a short stopover on the way to Fort Huachuca when I read the last two reviews. "Can't be that bad", I thought. Well, guess what, it was. The host was in church when I pulled in at 1230 on a Sunday so, with advice from a resident, I went ahead and pulled into one of two vacant sites, very happy to have found a place to drop anchor...
Nice new facility with lots of potential. They still have that $35 daily rate and that's why I gave it a '2' for value - but $130 weekly and $350 monthly rate a '4', at least. Bathhouse and laundry room a bit small but clean and well maintained while we were there. Laundry, both washers and dryers, now $1.25 per load. As mentioned in an earlier review, the lots are a bit short. However, over-nighting big rigs can stay hooked...
A pleasant rec area type location with nearby lake, picnic grounds and cabins. The back-in sites are next to the bathhouse with a view (out the front) of the lake and picnic area. Lot #15 that we stayed in had the best/widest "front yard" of the back-ins, but in general the back-ins are too close together. The pull-thrus are farther away from the lake but still within easy walk of the bathhouse/laundry. The weather was very nice over the weekend...
Wow, talk about eye of the beholder. Most recent reviews make West Fort Hood sound like Taj Mahal. If you were staying in the new pull-thru sites and there was a big screening fence (like in a junkyard) between you and the back-ins, you'd undoubtedly agree. The "other side of the fence" is horrible. The lots are close together and appearance is made even worse than would be otherwise because of many long term (homesteading) residents. If you...
I attempted to make a reservation in August 2011. No sites available. Instead stayed in not so nearby commercial park. When we visited the base noticed there seemed to be several unoccupied rental units in the campground. In fact, 8 of the 12 sites had rental trailers in them. Asked the office if they would move an unoccupied trailer to make room for someone like us calling for a reservation. No. So, at...
Have one thing to add (point out) not covered in earlier reviews. When they say $15 a day and $72 a week they mean it. We paid 15x5=$75 to stay for five days and would have had to pay an additional $15 to extend a day. Yes, it costs less to stay for seven days than it does for five or six days. Lack of a community room and particularly a bathhouse are the reasons for...
