Little has changed from last year, except for 2 items. One is just an awareness issue and the other is an inconvenience. (1) They just added 4 dry camping sites, OK, but they marked the space between them with the 4' concrete parking lot bumpers and placed them about a foot off the road edge along with wooden posts with site numbers. It adds some challenge to back out of sites # 4 & 5 without catching a hitch...
If you like remote camping this may be a good place to go. It’s on a small, but nice lake and set well back in the woods: Very picturesque with nice beach. You are at least 8 mi from any stores and with gate times, generally have to go completely around the base to get into Ft Jackson. There is a nice Aldi’s and Food Lion nearby. Site price is cheap, but you get what you pay for. RV...
Didn’t start out well; had made reservations for South Side, but when we checked in we were told they had us at mainside and that was the only opening. Mainside is small and tight. Mostly homesteaders. We were given Site 3, which is middle row inside down by wash rack. This site is Pull Thru, sort of. You can pull in, but if in a Class A, I doubt you can make the turn to pull out. We backed...
Our 3rd stay here. Last time here I mentioned that the CG roads were over-graveled making it difficult for 2 wheeled transportation. This year the roads were nicely graded and packed. we stayed in a center site (pull-thru) and everything was perfect. Strong wifi, very level concrete pad, FHU and cable. Staff as always was extremely helpful and friendly. We filled up with LP there which is a convenient setup and payed about $4/gal.
Anthony at the gym is now in charge of Carr Point. Things seem a little more organized so maybe we'll see some improvements. It didn't appear that any maintenance had been done on the gravel pad areas since last year; thin to no gravel in places with weeds growing through. Grounds are kept mowed and trash is routinely picked up. The bay view is good from the RV, but the shoreline tress/shrubs are starting to obscure it if you're...
Sites are gravel and sort of level with water & electric. Sites are back-ins, but everyone pulls in, as hookups are on the drivers side if you pull in plus you get great views of the bay. An unusal, but welcome touch is individual trash cans on site that are regularly emptied. The CG is in a great location, being near Newport, but security is non-existant at the campground. It's a favorite spot for locals to come down and...
All the amenities are pretty much as you get in Mayport, very well maintained and clean. Directions are good, if you keep in mind that they bring you into a gate that is closed after normal working hours, holidays and weekends. However, the Stimson gate is only a few hundred yards north on Rt 40-spur and open 24/7. The ST. Marys gate was posted as closed UFN. The sites are nice with landscaping and level concrete pads. We were...
We arrived a couple of days ahead of our reservation, but were unable to get in. The staff recommended we try Hanna Park which is only about a mile from the base (between the base & commissary); which we did. There are road works on base, if following the directions, with a small S-curve that was no problem if timed with on-coming traffic. I would expect construction to be complete by the summer. We had a water-view site that...
No cable or Wi-Fi and TV air signal is poor. The CG itself was extremely well maintained. Sites are level concrete pads. We had a pull-thru. The CG was almost full, mostly with permanents. For the off-season they have heated blankets over the water access. The price of $38 seemed high for the amenities provided, but what a great location to see Washington, Annapolis or Baltimore. We had to drive a few miles on base from gate to CG,...
We didn’t use the toll bridge indicated in the directions, but came down Rt 133 from I-10, a 4-lane road with non-toll bridge, which I would recommend using instead unless you are coming from the west. Access to the CG is very straightforward. There is a lot to do and see within a few miles either direction from the CG. The CG was very clean as were the restrooms & laundry. Ice was $1.50 a bag in the small...
Coming from the south to get to Wilmington required more downtown driving (we weren’t in coastal enough to take the ferry from Southport) than when we left going north. That way was pretty much a straight shot on good roads. Coming down Rt 421 to Kure Beach, I thought the best landmark was the white pillars either side of the road. The CG entrance was about a ¼ mile past them on the right. Our high rating of this...
The base location is convenient to I-95 N/S. We pulled in after hours and there were only 2 open sites, with all the others appearing to be taken up by full time residents. The sites in general had the allure of a mobile home park and were very tight. All sites are back ins, but we had to pull in as the W/Elec pole was 4 ft high and right on the edge of the concrete pad; blocking our...
