During a 4-month trip visiting many U.S. Military Campgrounds in the Southeast, we stopped at Eagle Hammock RV Park for a few nights. This wonderful RV Park was recently the winner of the 2009 Campers Choice award for BEST Military Campground in the Eastern USA. We wanted to personally congratulate them on this achievement. Finding the RV Park was simple, following the directions posted here. We arrived after hours, but were immediately greeted by the camp host on duty. This wasn't really needed, as there was an infomration packet with our names on it waiting for us on the bulletin board. Right away, we felt welcomed.
The RV Park is located along the edge of a 220-acre lake in the heart of Naval Submarine base Kings Bay, GA. This location is away for the base activities, yet close enough to use the base facilities. While at the campground, all you see are trees, the lake, and your fellow campers. There campground office is right at the entrance to the RV Park, where they also have a few items for sale. This a mid-size RV Park with 60 RV Sites with 10 of those being considered "lake side". There's also a small community room, restrooms, showers, and laundry. All of the facilities are fairly new, modern, and kept very clean. The 5 washers and 5 dryers in the laundry are free. An added bonus is also free WiFi Internet service throughout the park, with a computer also available for use in the community room. Diesel is also now available on base.

The roads within the RV park are gravel, with paved RV pads. The RV sites also have a paved patio with picnic table and a fire ring. Some of the sites a pull-thru and some a back-in. Everyone we met, from Charly the park manager, the various camp hosts, and our fellow campers were all in a great mood and very friendly. Another bonus going for this park are the numerous activities that are held. The community room is put to great use. During our visit, we missed the huge Super Bowl party, but enjoyed the Ice Cream social, followed with card bingo. We took this opportunity to have a small presentation to the campground staff on them being awarded the 2009 Campers Choice Award for the Eastern USA. Unfortunately, I didn't have their award plaque ready in time for this small presentation. Although the RV Park advertises rental trailers on site, management is smart to remove these rentals in the winter to open up 4 additional RV sites. They've learned that the rental trailers do well in Spring, Summer, and Fall. However, Winter is the busy time for the RV sites, with the numerous "snow birds" migrating North and South. While we didn't see the rental trailers, I understand they are the usual FEMA trailers that are setup in RV sites to be rented. Considering it's only about $10 a day more to rent the trailer than just an empty RV site, it's a pretty good deal for those who want to enjoy the "camping" experience in a RV. The regular RV site rates were $18 a night during our visit, with DOD, guests, and lakeside RV sites slightly higher. We consider this a fair price for a military RV Park. Especially condiering the free laundry and WiFi.

I wanted to visit the Submarine Museum in town, but they were closed during our short visit. However, we did spend the day with friends on nearby historic Jekyll Island. The weather was cool in early February, but sunny and pleasant. Due to our winter travel plans, our stay was too short. This RV Park would be wonderful place to spend 60 days, which is the stay limit. Due the growing popularity of this award winning RV Park, reservations are accepted and highly encouraged. I know they feel bad if you arrive and they're full.
