During our winter trip in 2009/2010, we spent a couple days at the Grassy Pond Recreation Area. Following the directions posted here took us directly to the FamCamp. There was plenty of parking for large rigs to check in at the office. Our first impression when driving up was "wow"! This is more than just a USAF FamCamp, it's a full featured recreation area.
We parked at the office and checked in. They don't take reservations for the RV Sites. Luckily, there were still a few RV sites available, although the winter visitors had already starting arriving. Combine that with no length of stay requirements, many RV's had been here for quite awhile. Although, their sites were clean with no signs of "homesteading". I still believe their should be a fair length of stay requirement at recreation facilities to prevent them from becoming a housing area.
The office staff was very friendly. The office also has a small camp store for the essentials and a large community room with a nice fireplace. The entire recreation area is located on the shores of Grassy Pond. On one end of the area are the 19 rental cabins. Then there's the office and store. The FamCamp is on the other end mixed in with the trees. Although, one section of the RV Sites is in an open area. In between the cabins and RV sites are plenty of recreation activities. We saw a children's swimming/wading pool, basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoes and a playground. There's also the beach and water activities. Mixed in with all of these activities are 4 or more screened in picnic pavilions for rent. although we didn't see any tents setup, I believe the tent sites are located throughout the area with covered picnic tables.
There were also a few laundry rooms and bathrooms spread out. At the time, it was $1 to wash and 75cents to dry. WiFi is available at the office and at the "round-house". The round-house is a small kitchen and community room in the middle of the RV Park. This is the center of activities for the FamCamp. During our visit, there was a breakfast being held for a small charge. They also have plenty of potlucks and many other social events here.
The recreation area is a combination of paved and gravel roads, with plenty of green grass for the recreational area. The RV Sites are large, gravel and include a picnic table on a concrete patio with a fire ring. Although the facilities are starting to get old and run-down, they were still in prett good shape. It looks like another case of the revenue generated at the Recreation Area isn't put back into the Recreation Area.
Overall, we enjoyed our short visit here and would like to return and spend more tiime. This is a very active, modern, and clean recreation area.
