This would be a nice location if the city of San Antonio would reopen and fix it up. I would hope they would enter some agreement with the military to reopen. The CG closed after Brooks AFB closed and the city bought it back in 2010. Your only options for military CG in the area are FT Sam and Lackland AFB.

There is a lot of construction on the base making it close to impossible to find the campground - find one of the private MPs & get him/her to escort you. There are only 15 spaces & only a few have sewer but there is a dump. Most spaces are only 30 amp service. The washrooms are never cleaned & the grounds are never mowed (or at least in the 2 weeks we were here). The camp host is friendly & the campground is quiet & close to everything in San Antonio. There are no facilities on the base as it is "owned" by the city & most buildings are rented to private companies. The rumor has it that the campground will eventually get turned over to the city. There is a reasonably priced, convenient laundry in the washroom building. Be sure to use a water regulator as the water pressure is 90 GPM. The price is right & there is a lawn mower available to mow your own space. Be watchful for fire ants.

I did not stay here; I just drove through checking it out. The spaces are very far apart, so you do get your privacy, which is a plus for me. It did not appear to be trashy, just old and run down a bit. But it did appear livable. The base is a mixture of military (very few) and civilian (mostly). There are guards at the gate, so you do need to show ID. It appears there is military housing on this base, though I am not 100% sure. Right outside the Base, is a fairly good size shopping center, so you can get whatever is that you need; WalMart is right outside the gate, as well as fast-food facilities, pet stores, and shopping. The guard at the gate was very helpful, in giving me directions out to the FamCamp. It is out of the way, on the perimeter of the base, but secluded and quiet. The pond that is catch & release for fishing, looks to me to be not very healthy. I don't think I would fish there, even it is catch & release only; I wonder why it is designated as "catch & release?" I would probably stay here for an overnight stay, while waiting to get in somewhere else.

This is a very different military campground. I guess I should say it really isn't a military campground. It is run by Brooks Development Authority. It is scheduled to close in 2011. That will be bad thing, because it is a nice quiet place to stay. Wild Bill as my wife calls him is the camp host. He will do whatever it take to make your stay worth it. We where only going to stay one night and then head to CCNAS. You can see we changed our plans. There is no BX, Commissary, and bowling alley. That's okay, they have a gym, gas station, and a little club anyone can go to with a military ID. There is a guy that shares his wifi with fellow campers. The library has free wifi. If you get there on the 1st of the month and stay the whole month it is a flat rate. If you get there on the 2nd you don't get the same flat rate. That is the one strange thing about the pricing. Yes there are some fulltimers, but that happens at a lot of campground. This is a place to stop if you are passing through the SA area.

Based on the previous reviews and low ratings, I expected to see a dump at this campground. Obviously, there's been a GREAT improvement here! We didn't see anything wrong, except the policy of letting campers stay indefintely. Even then, there wasn't any trashy RV sites or obvious homesteading. Instead, those RV sites that have been occupied for the season looked pretty normal, except for the tall grass under their RV's. The showers and bathrooms are a bit old, but the camp host is doing their best to keep them clean. The grass is mowed, but not neatly trimmed. There was only one vacant site during our visit. Sites are HUGE and spaced VERY far apart. The campground is located in a quiet part of the base. Although there's not many customer facilities on base, The roads aren't any rougher or narrower than other roads we've been on to access a military campground (better here than some others). There's plenty of room to for big rigs. I would prefer to stay here than any of the 'popular' military campgrounds in San Antonio. It's worth stopping by to see if there's an open RV site.

Did not stay here, but drove thru to check it out. The directions into Brooks are accurate, but that doesn't minimize the difficulty in finding the FamCamp. We just went by to see the place and take a few pictures. I'm glad I didn't have my RV in tow. Challenger Road and Perimeter Road did not show up on any maps we had. It appears that Brooks used to be a very nice place, but has now gone way south. The road leading out to the FamCamp is rough and narrow. The camp host told us that Brooks is no longer owned by the AF, but rather is owned by the city and portions leased back to the AF. Maybe that is why the signs leading to Brooks now say Brooks City Base. And, it would also explain the lack of security. We did not have to show any ID's to get on base and there were no barricades at the gates. The security fence around the base had many holes in it. There is no BX or Commissary, but there is a gas station and shoppette. I probably wouldn't stay here unless really desperate. I have to wonder how long this FamCamp will be around -- I suspect it's days are numbered.

Looks junkie. Never could find the host. always had a sign stating closed on door. Appeared to be full of full timers that had been there several years. Lots of junk laying around. Rather camp at Walmart.

Not worth it, unless you are running away from something, I`d rather stay at Sams. $10.00 is too much, needs big upgrade.

Substandard in all catagories. Needs mowing and removal of dead trees. Pavement in poor condition. Only sites occupied had long-term tennants with lots of trash around. Both Lackland AFB & Ft. Sam Houston have nice facilities in San Antonio, so skip Brooks AFB.
