This review is a bit late. We have visited this RV campground 6 times . Mostly during the winter, but one summer also. As stated many times by others the winter wind will get to you. We love the beach, and made it a point to walk the dogs down there at least twice a day. The people on the base, and in town can not be beaten. There are also about a dozen more positive points. Due to a couple of factors we have decided to stay in Rockport, Tx this year. First point is the base has priced themselves out of competition with the civilian campgrounds. The price for my 30 amp trailer, would be $18 per day,or $580 per month. The campground in Rockport is $320, incld. WiFi, and cable TV. True I will have to pay electric, but that should not run more that $40 per mo. Next point is the lack of organization, at the base. Our last stay was riddled with changes that affected us, and with little or no notice. The poor people in the office had no idea of what was going on. I believe that the powers to be are more interested in making money than servicing the Active and retired military people that it is their mission to do. It is a shame that I have to write this type of review, but in my opinion this facility has been lowering it standards of service for the few years.

This is the fourth year we have visited this facility. Increase in prices, decrease in overall experience. In the last two years they added considerable spaces. In the past they had two camp hosts (overkill). Now there is not a camp host, so rules are not enforced. While there a week I experienced loose dogs, barking dogs being tied outside, ladies bathhouse could not be entered by code, cars parked on the grass. No way this is allowed in the past with camp hosts. Hot water in shower and bathroom just warm enough not to be cold. WiFi was frustrating at best unless you go to the community room. I don't know, perhaps all the wind just left me a little cranky this year.

Campground is at a great location. Convenient to shopping on base and off. Rated lower for cleanliness and amenities compared to other parks. No camp host at this park. Everything is handled through the office. Great tv reception with antenna. Wind..Wind... and more wind. Great temps but the wind is almost constant. Wifi is hit and miss. Its okay in the community room. Would stay again.

R.B. left this review using the Directory software: - if it weren't for the wind here, we would love this place.the wind can be really bad at times, but since we are right on the gulf i suppose that is the normal. the sites are not crowded on one another, the campground map told us exactly how to get to the site, and most folks seem to even adhere to the dog pickup policy. the neighbors are very friendly, traffic is not a problem, and many friendly walkers. the sites are great, wide and long with good hookup location.

We love this place. We stayed on the grass sites at Paradise Cove. Since we are able to entertain ourselves just fine, we don't care about organized activities, so we can't comment on that, but we had a big site, quiet neighbors, steady electricity and everything was spic and span. We couldn't get the WiFi to work, but since we normally use a Verizon aircard anyway, it wasn't an issue. We love being near the water and enjoy all the fishing, and the base provides a nice little commissary and Exchange. We enjoy Corpus and the surrounding area, so this place works just great for us.

Did you know that certain campers are allowed to run roughshot over the campground. Running people out of the showers, posting their own signs, starting trouble with the other campers and absolutely nothing will be done about it? The rate is going up and now is the highest campground in Corpus. I know this from staying there nearly 3 years and watching it go downhill. BTW, the host program was canceled and so if you come in after hours good luck. Any complaints about anything will be totally disregarded and ignored.

This trip was really good the lady at check-in worked with us and was very professional. When we got parked and setup we went to the club house to see what was happening on the board and found the AC there not working. Seems to have been off for a couple of days longer, but they got it back on and it was comfortable in there to do some Computer work. The Club House had some kids in there that looked to be Pre-Teens playing Video Games and I guess this was their time away from adults and was cussing loudly about their games. I think there is a need for supervision and that the Club House is not a place to turn into a Day Care center for kids under the age of 14. The fishing was great, we caught some Sand Trout, Speckled Trout, Papeno ??, Croaker. The Laundry Room was clean as was the bathrooms. Other than what I mentioned it was a pretty good stay, I would recommend to anyone.

This campground no longer has a Camp Host. The grounds are clean and restroom areas are cleaned properly. The office personnel, special thanks to Jeremy, are very professional and work very well with personnel coming in for a stay at the campground. One thing we experienced while there, the hospital on base does not honor Medicare and TriCare For Life (they do accept TriCare Prime). They provided us with a printout with directions to the "Doctors Center" which is located approximately 6 miles west on highway 358. They took us in within an hour and a half (since we did not have an appointment). We were able to see a doctor and got examined and treated very well. The "Doctors Center" directions are very simple, exit on Everhardt, turn left, turn right on Corona (first street past signal), turn right on Embassy and turn right on the frontage road. It is located almost immediately on the right. They accept Medicare and TriCare for Life.

We are coming here quiet often and have had our share of many different RV Sites and all have been good. When we came to check in we were greeted by a young lady with a smile and was very polite. She told us about the Tropical Storm and how the weather has been. The rest of the staff I came in contact with were really helpful also. On Saturday I called the office about the laundry room being locked, and was told some one would be there to unlock it. Less than 5 minutes they arrived and had it open ready for use. The Staff needs more than a pat on the back for a job well done. Also Congrats to the Manager Staff like this makes his or her job more easier. Thanks, Michael Starr

We are getting to love this place. The Manager is apparently training the young staff on customer service. They are very professional and hospitable. Amazingly they are keeping the facilities almost spotless although the burrs and wind remain to be annoying. Watching the fireworks across the Bay, on the island and Corpus while fishing were certainly a highlite. Management should offer more recreational activities for the kids and allow them to be more occupied while giving the parents a break during the day.

We had a excellent time at Shields Park for the Holiday. We met many friends both new and old. The ladies at Check-In were really polite and like to joke back at the wife when she joked with them. They were very Professional, helping, and should be commended. While fishing we could see the Firework displays over on the Island. All of the facilities were Clean and well maintained. Some of the first timers that had came there also mentioned how good the facilities was. I would recommend this park for anyone that comes through the area, by stopping here they can see the true hospitality of Corpus Christi NAS and the ladies and men at the MWR area.

We had a really good time, the area was extremely windy and it was not far from the fishing area even though only Eels, Hardheads, and Gaftops were mostly biting. We were on one of the older pads that was built with the Water and Electricity on one side and Sewer on the other. We had really good Internet Connection at the site. The Staff was really good, polite and had a welcoming smile each time we saw them.

Stay here for 3 nights. Made reservation 2 days prior to arrival and had no problems getting site once we arrived. Checkin was at the marina, make sure you take pet rabies proof in with you when checking in, we did. Our site was a back in with plenty of of space on the large concrete pad, enough room for the fifth wheel and truck parked beside. The base has a nice exchange and commissary as well as a quick shop and gas station which has deisel. Lots of area to walk or bike ride next to the water/seawall. There is a long concrete pier that you can fish off of right next to the camping area. Bathrooms and showers were OK, nothing great but more than acceptable. There is a really nice community building with full kitchen and comfortable chairs with cable TV. Sites have water, sewer, power 30/50 amp, and spotty cable, about 50% of the sites didn't have working cable. The wind here gets strong rather quickly so it's not a good idea to leave your awning out if you aren't there to watch it. Getting to the base was easy and with a DOD sticker and ID card easy to get in. We took a trip over to Mustang Island State Park and Padrea Island National Seashore, this is a nice area to visit if you come here. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay here and would recommend it to anyone, and will hopefully return in the future.

We stayed in Paradise Cove from October 2010-April 2011 and really enjoyed our time there. The staff was friendly and courteous at all times. The manager, Stacy, immediately addressed our needs to accommodate my disability at our site. The first person to welcome us to the park was Frank, (Stacy's husband) and he helped us the entire time we were there. The sites are very large, the wifi needs some work, the view of the gulf is beautiful and this is a great place for bird watchers. The park is close to the commissary and NEX and all off base shopping is within 10 miles. The wind is the only complaint we have, but only mother nature can answer on that one. I don't know how regmikewall from another posting knows all these things about the park, unless he/she was a disgruntled employee, but we thoroughly loved our stay here and may be back next October.

WOW, glad I stayed there before reading the review by regmikewall in April 2011. Fortunately we based our decision to stay at Shields RV Park, on the reviews by previous posters. We found the Park to be enjoyable but often too windy. Activities for the guests have increased from our stays in prior years. The staff is young but courteous and helpful. If they cant give you the info you need, the Park manager Stacy is there to quickly respond to your requests and needs. The wifi is sporadic but it is free, but we have an air card and never suffered from the lack of Internet. In addition to the scheduled activities in the park, Management organized several "outside of the Park" socials in Corpus Christi, and they were very enjoyable and great fun. The Marina has new equipment and two new 17 ft. boats for rent to the military and CG guests. I would say that except for the regmikewall post, all the other posters are right on the money.

I arrived early February and stayed until late April. I've been to several FAMCamps and this one is without a doubt the best... hands down. I stayed in Paradise Cove campground. Large sites and very clean. Free washers and dryers. Both campgrounds are close to the Gulf. The manager, Stacy goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome. She organized ice cream socials, pot luck meals and a pizza party. Those were fun and provided an opportunity to meet other camper. Also a very friendly protestant church on the base. We will be back next year to get away from the Wisconsin winter!

Shields RV park could be jewel; however it isn’t. While the sites are large and the concrete pads are level, the rest of the park is subpar. The office staff, really do not know what they are doing, some of them try very hard; however, management has no clue about running an RV Park. There is no website, there is no monthly calendar (any event notice is done via the night host being asked to distribute a flyer the day before or day of the event - NOT GOOD), The manager and staff do not know how to schedule spaces, it is EXTREMELY common for patrons to be move from site to site, reason giving - the computer says we need to move them for an incoming patron. In one case Patron A moved into Patron B’s site, Patron B moved into Patron C’s site and Patron C moved into Patron A’s site - CRAZY. Retired Military are told the park is full, in reality there are vacant sites. The management does not care about the complaints, they say if the retiree does not come back there will be others. Is this the way to treat retired and disabled patrons - NO. One of the night hosts did not do her job (she is not living in the park full time nor is she a veteran), the other two (veterans and one has a bronze star and both are disabled) did 20 times the work. Sne is moving on and the other who has been a night host at Shields for 2 1/2 years was let go because his services were no longer required, when asked why, people were told there never were any night host during the summer - A LIE. In fact the night host who does a terrible job - still working and the manager wants to put her husband to be a night host - ISN’T THIS NEPOTISM AND A CONFLICT OF INTEREST? Until the base commander and the head of MWR make changes, we will not be back. WE WARNED, there is nothing to do, there isn’t any welcome package, there are no maps, no activities like other military RV parks, they want to make it so CIVILIANS can be given same priority as military and retired military - ISN’T THIS A MILITARY FACILITY.... WHY.......? GO ELSE WHERE.......

The new staff and new manager Stacy are working hard to make this an even better place to stay than before. During our week stay we attended an ice cream social and a RV'er welcome aboard at the club with free pizza. Both events were fun. The campground itself is very open with no shade but being close to the gulf and the great fishing pier was nice. Access to in town Corpus via the back gate of the Naval station was very convenient.

Well run FAMCamp. Beautiful views of the bay. We kayaked just off the point located by the campground. Campground is busy during the winter but has plenty of drycamping sites available. Campground hosted an ice cream social while we were there and a "garage sale". Easy access to Padre Island and Corpus Christi.
