West Fort Cavazos Travel Camp

Couple of changes to above instructions. Going thru the commercial gate inspection is only required when base is on highest alert status, other then that just enter the main gate for West Ft. Hood off Clark Rd. Another change is that weapons are now allowed as long as unloaded and in a locked weapons case while on base, or campground. Also the west Ft Hood fam camp does accept reservations (in fact I made mine 6 months in advance) and are recommended as to all the homesteaders there, plus they only have 2 pull thru sites for short term but I did see 6-7 back in sites empty the whole time we were there.

Wow, talk about eye of the beholder. Most recent reviews make West Fort Hood sound like Taj Mahal. If you were staying in the new pull-thru sites and there was a big screening fence (like in a junkyard) between you and the back-ins, you'd undoubtedly agree. The "other side of the fence" is horrible. The lots are close together and appearance is made even worse than would be otherwise because of many long term (homesteading) residents. If you are in one of the 64 back-in sites and want to sit outside on your "patio" you will have a built-in footrest - the neighbors sewer hose. We were in one of the front row sites and had the worst of it (#8). To begin with, for all of the front row sites, you have to back off the pavement into a shallow ditch to get fully into the site. After I backed in I had three inches to spare between our front slide and the lot marker post. On the other side I had a foot and a half between the trailer and a big electric pole - and the neighbor's sewer inlet was five feet from our entry door. Now for the good part: The community room, laundry and bathrooms are new and are being kept in reasonably clean shape. There is WiFi in the community room, and on one occasion I was able to log in from our trailer. The office staff I encountered were super, very helpful and personable, even patient with my grumblings about our lot and the homesteading situation. (There is a meaningless stay limit; extensions are easily obtained for both the pull-thru and back-in sites.) Best news of all: there are plans for the Corps of Engineers to come in and completely gut and rebuild the back-in section. Would I stay there again in the pull-thru section if that was all that was available? Most certainly, at least for a short while. It is conveniently close to the base facilities and price is very reasonable. But that doesn't mean I can put on blinders and give it a "5".

No reviews for Ft. Hood in 2013? Hard to believe. We arr'd on NY's eve to take our TT out of storage, shakedown for a few days and then head out. The folks in the office were so friendly & kind. Good to be back in Texas !! We were disappointed to find the Short-term (traveling RV'ers) paved, pull-thru sites were all full. After taking the TT out of storage I did not want to drive 25m to Ft. Hood's BLORA. Rhonda told me that they had several "PCS-ers, long-term" back-in sites avail, so I went & looked. They are mostly so packed in tight and on opposite sides of narrow aisles. I was pleased to find there were 2 openings on the front row (spots 1-15). Huge road, no across the street RV's and much wider spots. We're close to the spotlessly clean laundry/club/bathhouse too. For a few days it will be just fine. So now we know some back-ins are suitable for us. Big news, Ft.Hood (West) has internet now. Ft. Hood Travel is on the air, and it's working fine. Don't know how long it's been "up", since you other members haven't been reviewing Ft. Hood during 2013. (hint, hint-pls submit reviews. It really helps) The free ice machine that we grew to love so was gone last visit, but it is back. It's inside the lounge now, doubtless to prevent unauthorized users getting all their ice. Anyway-free ice after storage here is a real treat for us. Free Wi-Fi & free ice!! I'm a happy customer. Oh yeah, Larry - back-in sites are $12.50 now, not $10.50.

Good ole' Ft. Hood. Official policy is no reservations, but they will "hold" a spot for you if you're driving in & there are openings, that day. Sure helps to know you've got a spot at the end of a long drive. Everything's still clean as as well run as ever. Bathhouse/showers spotless, great hot water too. Amenities/Facilities graded 3 due to no wi-fi. I sure wish they'd put in a wi-fi, even if it's in the clubhouse. You can wash your RV in your Famcamp spot. Value is graded a 4 also due to the $18 per night fees. We love it here, don't doubt it. It's just we stay at a lot of great Famcamps that aren't $18. The new Chili's is open on base. Main base gas station has diesel. FYI- the storage yards here are as good as we've seen or used anywhere. Great people and great service. Dumb as it sounds it's pretty much like the guards on gate duty tell you " welcome to the great place". Ft. Hood has everything you'd need on a base and probably 2 of them.

B.W. left this review using the Directory software: - Arrived Friday after noon and went through the security at the Clark Road Commercial Gate. Also through out the base a ID was required. No problem as we have them. Its good to see them checking as I don't have anything to hide.Only site left was in the older part and boy its small. Marcus was the one who checked us in and I ask him if a site in the newer section came open if I could get one. Next day He call me and offered me one, I took it and moved. Spacious and clean, We have enjoyed our stay. Its our second trip here and now both times stayed in newer section. Commissary and PX were both visited. Diesel is available on base at one of the convenient stores. Note Diesel is also available at the Harker Heights WalMart store which is east on 190, just east of Killeen about a mile toward Temple TX. Price is much Cheaper. Note as usual you have to be carefully because entrance and exits are not to large.

We arrived today and although we had DoD stickers on both the RV and the car we were subjected to a full blown out search, they even opened the cabinets and went into the bathroom. This is after we had to guess what exits to take because no one knew what the exit numbers were that we needed to exit at to get here. When you enter the park the first thing you see is a bunch of back ins that are like sardines, maybe 10' between each. So if you come here take a pull through. Staff was rude and even put the wrong out date on the reservation. No park map, Sharp turns and homesteaders galore. Guess they never saw AR 25-1 "Homesteading is Forbidden" or they just do not give a _________. Oh yes, after you get the 3rd degree by the civilian police then you have to go through a military gate where, as usual the Army guard asks you for your ID, like every other military installation in the world. There is also NO place to park to register at the office so you will end up blocking the street. We stayed in a Class A.

We were very pleased with our experience here. Main reason for coming here was to visit with our family for the Thanksgiving holiday so we didn't spend alot of time in the RV. Mary and the rest of the staff are very friendly and helpful. A piece of information we could have used prior to our arrival,,,,There's an extremely large asphalt drill yard across from the RV park entrance that can be used for temporary parking.

Back at Ft. Hood again. Same great folks here and same facilities. Since this is the largest US Mil installation in the world and has everything imaginable for the GI, I can't figure out why they can't hook up Wi-Fi for the RV park. Also, the Golden Age Passport discount goes away end of 2011, I just discovered. We like it here; it's our most visited RV park since we store our RV here. Their storage facility is tops. If you're lucky enuff to get a spot here-keep it.

This is a two section campground. The newest section is pull-through with roomy sites. There are concrete pads and asphalt patios at each site with a picnic table made of concrete. Sites are slightly high in the front, which makes leveling very easy. There are no trees to block the sun (or satellites). There is cable TV connection at each pedestal, but we didn’t use it. The older section should be called the “sardines in a can” section. All those sites are back-in and very tightly spaced. They are less expensive; but, to me, the savings is not worth it. All RV parks should be designed like the pull-through section of this park. The office, shower, laundry, and lounge appear to be new buildings and are attractively lighted at night. The lounge is incomplete in my opinion. The TV doesn’t appear to work (snowy picture) and is inconveniently placed. There is a computer area, but no internet connections, and there is no WiFi. There is a small refrigerator, but no oven/range or microwave. One nice amenity is an ice machine outside the office building (all parks should have ice machines). The bathroom fixtures resemble prison fixtures (I’ve been told :-) ). The toilets are stainless steel including a stainless steel seat. The shower heads are also prison-like, except the handicapped shower, which has a shower wand. There is plenty of hot water. There is a playground and picnic area under gnarly, yet picturesque, oak trees near the pull-through section. There is a grassy dog walk area.

Run the negatives first, they need a on site host/manager that is a full timer. The park lacks wifi and the pull through spots have weak water pressure and the laundry needs more space/machines. The park otherwise is spotless, the ice machine is a great idea, the restrooms are always clean as is the laundry. Value wise the back in spots are geared toward long term stays and has a waiting list, the pull through spots are going to be great once the trees are grown up, but are very level and have ample room to maneuver in. Overall the best option (short of BLORA) in the immediate Fort Hood area. Also the stay limits are easy to deal with as the park is busy but rarely full on the pull through side, we got approval for 2 extra weeks by asking.

What's going on RV'ers ? Don't tell me that I'm the only one to use Ft. Hood since Jan of this yr. If you're reading this- pls, pls put in your own rating after using a military RV facility. I want to/need to, read your write-ups as I travel around. Please ? Ok. `Nuff said. West Ft. Hood is still spotlessly clean, handy to use, staffed by friendly folks, & surrounded by the best post/base facilities in the US. The big news is that since my last report the free ice machine at the office has been removed for maintenance. That's it. If you're a user of free wi-fi like me, try the Pizza Hut on post. Or use the Post library. If you're heading to Ft. Hood, call ahead to check on openings and they will hold a place for you, for that day only. It's almost a reservation.

Looks like the first review of 2011. We store our RV here so we get to stay on Ft. Hood alot. Same great RV park. The facilities are spotless, and staff is friendly. If not for the Wi-Fi that they "haven't got", I wouldn't have a thing to ask for. Don't forget to use your America the Beautiful/Golden Access card for $5 discount. And as for Ft. Hood, what it lacks, you just don't need. For example, there is a new Chili's restaurant being constructed across from the Main base Gas Station (the one w/ Diesel) on TJ Mills Avenue. What a base !

R.E, left this review using the Directory software: Arrived at this campsite in November and found the site was one of the new pads that they had. I was placed on site 4 and the help from the personnel on duty was outstanding. The location and facilities were outstanding. Close to base exchange and commissary. The only thing they did not have was wi-fi.

As I read the previous ratings I did not fully appreciate how close the RV's are placed in the back-in spots until we actually arrived and saw for ourselves. They are so close that you could probably prop your feet on your neighbor's sewer line. I feel very fortunate that there was availability in the pull thru area as they are very spacious.

A very nice RV park. It's like 2 different parks. The "back in sites" are so tight, we feared having to try & back in. It's really only a paved parking lot with hookups. Barely 6 feet between RV's. We were put in the pull thru's, which are on the other side of the park. They're really different. Large sites, very far from your next door neighbor, grassy between. Our 25 ' TT had no problems with the hookups/W/E/S. These are for shorter stays, but who cares? Stay here or look else where. Bathhouses, lounge, laundry, etc. were spotless. Tons of real hot water in the showers. Office staff was great too; very helpful & friendly. The RV park has no official wi-fi, but I'm online now from someone's nearby connection (thanks). The cable TV package is better (bigger) than my cable TV pkg at home. Ft. Hood has EveryThing. What a huge base. Finally found diesel at the AAFES station on TJ Mills Blvd. (it's the road coming in from the "Main/biggest" Ft. Hood gate. All-in-all, a very nice place to stay.
