This tiny little Navy base is like the world's best kept secret! Nestled within the Appalachian Mountains, my family and I have been going here for the last 6 years. We normally go in February for a long weekend around Presidents Day because we love the snow and there has always been plenty of it then! This year we decided to go over Memorial Day and had just as much fun doing summer things. George Washington National Forest is filled with activities as Brandywine State Park is very close. There's not much shopping around so if you're looking for that you will be disappointed or have to drive into Harrisonburg. There are mostly outdoor activities, but what a beautiful place to get away from it all as you're in the mountains! The cabins on the base are top notch and come furnished with everything you'll need. All you need to bring is your food and there's a small commissary that is pretty well stocked. Now.....for the bad news...as the last reviewer correctly stated.....this base is closing September 2015 and the last that they are accepting reservations for the cabins is August 2015. Get there, and get there quick if you want the experience of getting away from it all for awhile!
