Keesler AFB and Katrina

I just added three pictures to the Keesler AFB web page. Hopefully, they will improve the visual appeal of this campground. This is a fine campground to use and it is in heavy use.

This is the first time we have been near the devastation of Katrina and it is indeed sobering to see how much damage was done so long after the storm hit. The big hotels and casinos along the waterfront are making a nice comeback but generally the waterfront is devoid of all of the businesses and homes that lined beach road before the storm. It is as if the first block of buildings along both sides are the beach road have been wiped away.

The only restaurants that appeared to survive the storm were Waffle Houses. It appears that the buildings for these restaurants were constructed to last. The beaches that I am sure prior to Katrina would have wall to wall people have very few if any folks out there.

As most of you know, Keesler lost both its BX and commissary and new facilities are well underway.

Like I said earlier, this is not news to many of you, but the realization of the immense loss in terms of property and lost business just struck me as worthy of note.
