We are staying at Short Stay naval rec area and want to comment on the campground. The good and the bad. It is a beautiful place to stay, for the most part it is quite and the late October weather has been great. The campground has two fees, one is for lakefront sites and the other is for the rest of the campground. The lakefront sites have cable TV and is right on the lake but you can see the lake from anywhere in the campground. There are campsites for RVs, cabins and villas, and tent camping. The sewer dump is located on a paved road and is easily accessible.
Good: The sites are pretty level and the security patrols 24/7, they also have a contolled gate entry system.
Could use improvement:
They have only one restroom/shower facility for all of the campground area eventhough there is no sewer hookups, the cabins in the campground have no bathrooms. There is another restroom near the docks and that is where the laundry facilities are also. The restrooms in the campgrounds are in need of repair with two of the men's shower's broke (leaving one shower for everyone at the campsites). On the weekends the restrooms are not very well maintained
Tent camping is not restricted to the tent camping area and tents are pitched in with RVs and the tents are pitched wherever they please (right next to and behind our motorhome this weekend). It could work if the camphosts would simply tell everyone to respect other camper's space and enforce some kind of space allocation. It seems that not all campers understand they should not allow their children to run through and around other camper's area.
The fire rings are all in need of repair and none of them have been cleaned out since we have been here.
The unpaved road running through the campground needs repair, it has large chuckholes.
Overall thoughts: This would be a great place if the Navy would put a little money into it and maintain the park. The office peronal are either real nice or could care less depending on who you see and talk to (I guess that is a place to improve also but some of the older ones are really nice). Would I stay again? I think South Carolina has better maintained state parks and campgrounds at the same price so this would not be at the top of my places to stay eventhough the surroundings are really beautiful.

Thanks for the update and comments......
If you haven't already, this information would be great posted as a review of the campground. Perhaps you weren't aware that there's a pretty good rating and review process in place on the website.
Visit the campground's information page on this website. If you're logged in, you'll see options to "write review". This also gives you the chance to rate your experience of your stay.

Hi Bill & Jean, Short Stay Naval Recreation area is situated on lake Moultrie just a little north of Moncks Corner, SC. If you will go to the campground section of this site you will find lots of very good reviews about Short Stay and also the directions. I have an Aunt & Uncle that have lived in Moncks Corner for more than 50 years and have visited Short Stay many times over the years. It is a great recreation area with something to do for all ages.

We've been twice with our 30' tt and loved the place. Once was last fall when the lake was very low and the other just this past summer. The lake was much higher and the swimming was great. Life guards very professional and mature. Cabins and duplexes do need some help. We were in spot #50 this last time and it was a pull through. Met great people. Get a map before heading that way, it is off the beaten path. We will head there again. A nice place to base when visiting Charleston, SC.

We have also stayed at Short Stay several times. The location is great, but the campsite grounds could be so much better if the camphost was more professional and treated all campers the same. Also the Navy should invest some money to repare the roads, update the fire rings, which are in various states of disrepair. We have never been greeted by the camphost asked if we needed anything. I thought that was their job. We went as asked who we talk to about getting the fire ring cleaned out and she stated go tell the office. There are several homesteaders and the campsites around their campers are totally trashed with various items placed outside their camper. The security personnel on the other hand are always professional.
Just the past weekend we had a reservation when we arrived we located a spot and then when security came to unlock the electric box there was a card already in the slot, but no camper. I understood the policy to be you could not reserve any certain spot. So we drove around again and there was a spot we found #20 that had no card we asked if we could take this one and was told unless we had a reservation for a waterside we could not take that one. It is not on the water and no one arrived the entire weekend.
This is the second time there have been issues with this. I feel that there should be one policy for all campers that is not the case. A reservation is a reservation but there was no camper on spot 6 when we arrived but there was a card in the slot - What is up with that?
