I just visited Ft Henry, AKA Fort Story, VA. One of those lesser known military installations where one can get beach front accommodations for a reasonable price. They don't have a campground, but they do have cabins and other first class lodging. We parked the rig on post at an empty parking lot and rented a cabin for a day. Did not have the time to check out all of the amenties, so I would suggest that anyone who lives in the area expand on my positive first impression.
There a few of these gems around the county where it's better to park the rig and rent quarters than be in a campground. This is one of them.

Skyking.. check your PMs..
Fort Story is at Cape Henry.. (lived down Atlantic Ave for a while as a kid, back when US-60 went through the center of the Fort, no by-pass.)
Cape Henry is where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is the site if the first landing by the Jamestown Colonists in the New World. Also home to two lighthouses..
There is a FamCamp onboard.. just 1000 ft or so South of the new lighthouse.
Following links to Ft Story's MWR opportunities are from the Campground section of this site..

We stayed in the fam camp last Nov. at Ft. Henry. It is wooded but not bad. I'm surprised you didn't see the campground.

Virginia is a big place..
If you are driving I-95 then Quantico and AP Hill are good stops enroute..
