After a year-long study of whether a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier could be stationed at Mayport Naval Station, the secretary of the Navy told members of Florida's congressional delegation Monday that a carrier will be moved to the base within five years. The move will bring an additional 3,190 military personnel to Mayport, which has been without a carrier since the decommissioning of the USS John F. Kennedy in March 2007. www.news4jax.com/news/17997574/detail.html

The additional sailors and marines who will be stationed there will have a tremendous impact to base housing and ammenities availble through MWR. We hope that the influx will not be hard to get accommodation at the Pelican Roost in the near future. Perhaps Osprey Cove campground will be finished by then. ???

Well, I'm a dummy...I thought the JFK was a nuke. It will be fun watching a BGB (Big Gray Boat...I'm Army) go by Pelican Roost! Will also be great to see the base more busy.

They are ALL Nuclear now. The base will be making changes to be able to berth and maintain it. Mayport has been trying since the Kennedy left to get Nuclear authorization, that was the big hold up.
I am glad to see it moving. The Navy needs to keep more ports open and not have all their eggs (ships) in one place. They should have kept Charleston Sub Base open also, but Georgia is fine.

shoot when i was stationed there from 1990-2004, they were always trying to get a nuke baby to find a home, good to hear it finally got the green light
with jfk gone that pretty much sealed the deal if they wanted a cv to berth
