Fort Sam Houston Gate Closing

If you're coming to the Fort Sam Houston travel camp, be advised that the gate referenced in the directions in the campground listing closed yesterday indefinitely. The Security Guard at the gate stated that it would only be opened if flooding over the road prevented any other access to the travel camp.

The staff at the campground advises anyone coming to Fort Sam travel camp to call the campground office when they're about an hour away to get directions. Because of all the construction going on on post, many roads are being closed/detoured on a constantly changing basis. What was good yesterday might not be today. Don't let it discourage you from coming here though, it's a great campground!

Having been at Ft. Sam this spring, the gate referenced in the directions is a main gate and seems to be the primary access gate for the base on the north side. This route crosses the creek that has been a problem in the past.

The other route on the east side that is very small and temporary and is right after the railroad tracks would seem to be the one that would be closed. This is the one that bypasses the creek.

Are you sure this the last one is not the one that is being closed?

Let me see if I can clarify this...LOL

The gate that is now closed is the one in the directions that are given on the Military Campgrounds software program for the computer. The directions given here on the website are correct....for now. LOL

The staff here were pretty upset about the gate closing....they were given only about an hour's notice. As a matter of fact, I called when I was coming on I-35 South around San Marcos and that was the way they told me to come in (make the right on Holbrook, come through the gate, and the campground is on the left.) I JUST made it through the gate in time...they closed it behind me. LOL

The directions given here on the website from the Rittiman Road exit are how they are telling everyone to come in now. You still have to go over the area where the river floods, and they're not sure how anybody's going to get there if it does. They THINK the gate off Holbrook will be opened if the road floods over, but nobody is confirming that for sure.

The new bridge is still probably about 4-6 months from completion. When it is complete they will have to redo the approach to it from the Nursery Road side, so there will probably be some more road closings on the route to the RV park. The staff is recommending that you call when you're about an hour away from San Antonio so they can give you the latest directions.

The website will always have the most current directions that we have. The Directory software will catch up once a month. Of course, that also depends if you keep your copy of the Directory software current.
