Texas to South Flordia

Sad that we won't be able to make advance reservations at the bases along the way. we're new to the Class A and haven't roughed it like some, so are afraid to be stuck somewhere without a spot. Any ideas. RV.net comments said they have had reservations for 6 to 8 months ahead. So much for last minute travel plans to Florida.

Florida seems to be a popular winter destination B)
I remember when I was stationed in Key West in the mid 70's, the state police would barricade the highway at the north end of US1 during the Christmas Holidays. If you didn't have a reservation, you had to turn around and go back.

Most all bases have over-flow or dry-camp spaces. Most bases (unlike civilian CGs) will attempt to accomodate you instead of sending you on your way. And most have a 'revolving' policy that gets you into a spot eventually, so you can power-up, drain, fill etc., and relax. And all have at least water and dump stations separate.

With that in mind, and the fact that you're pretty self-contained for at least short stays, I'd never let "no reservations' get in the way of a trip.

I've been traveling these camping roads for a lot of years, although my rig is much smaller than "Class A", and have never once been to a military CG that turned me away. The mind-set of the MCG hosts is quite unlike the civilian CGs hosts ... so, if it was me, I'd go for it and adjust along the way.

The Keys, from what I hear, is a different story and tough in the winter, but even there, the bases have a rotation policy that allows everyone some time to hook-in. But, have little experience in the Keys, as we've only been once.

Many campers/travelers say they have sometimes found it difficult in the southern areas during winter. But I expect that's someone looking for a reserved longer-term stay. We've always found enough time everywhere to hook-up and do what we need (charging, shopping, filling, dumping) at least for enough time to get us moving to the next stop on our plan (although, we don't set a true plan, but go wherever the travels take us.

SO, take off, be flexible, and enjoy your trip, would be my recommednation.

You didn't mention where in TX you are or what route your are taking. If it's along I-10, you'll start hitting the majority of military CGs in MS. If they are full, then you can get some discounts at commercial CGs by signing up for a Passport America card.

No disrespect intended, but I got a chuckle out of the "roughing it" in a Class A comment. A minimum of 12V, propane, decent weather, and peace/quiet, perhaps parked in a farmers field among the cows, is part of the joy of RVing. One just has to watch out where they step. :)

The nice thing about a home on wheels is that one doesn't have to be stuck in any one place for too long.

Florida has some great state parks but they fill up fast. The w/e only sites are more available on less than 11 month notice.. give them a "lookie see"

.. We'll be headed down to NAS Key West this winter, the generator is serviced, fueled and waiting to serve.

You might want to check out Ross Prairie Campground near Dunnellon, Florida...It is part of the Cross Florida Greenway area and this is primarily set up for horse campers, but has w/e and a dump with about 15 or so sights. We stayed there last year and plan on doing so again next month for a couple of days. Google it...You can call the campground directly at 1-352-427-4436, however reservations need to be made through Reserve America.com...As of now their site shows plenty of open sites.
