Grand Canyon and others? was created by GolferIggy
Any suggestions on touring the South West especially the Grand Canyon? At present we are 30 miles North of Denver and are either heading to Kirtland AFB or Hill AFB in Utah to regroup. Our plan is to tour the South West starting in October and head back towards Seattle via HWY 101 along the ocean before flying back home to Alaska in December. Any suggestions regarding out trip would be appreciated.

We're just finishing up a four month trip of the west. We stayed at both Kirtland and Hill. We liked them both. Hill was a little cheaper and availability at Kirtland will be tight until after October 9th. We visited the south rim of the Grand Canyon. If you can get a reservation at Trailer Village which is the full hook up campground in the National Park, that would be my first choice. Folks say sunrises and sunsets at the canyon are very special. We stayed in a Passport America park about 50 miles away in Williams Arizona. It was an easy drive to the canyon and Williams is interesting. It is on old route 66 and worth some time visiting the shops. The Oregon coast and their state parks was worth the time. Enjoy your trip.

If you go to the Grand Canyon make sure you go to the Red Rocks of Sedona and the Painted Desert. Both are close to the Grand Canyon and an easy drive. Painted Desert and Indian Reservation in the S.E. corner of the Desert were beautiful and interesting.

Thanks folks for your input. My plan is coming together. Bryce Canyon and then the South side of the Grand Canyon. Painted Rocks and Painted Desert will also be on our list. Kirtland not available for another nine days and Hill AFB a little out of the way from our Denver RV spot. Will check out the suggested RV Camps.
Plan is finally coming together.
Thanks again,
Richard

We visited the Grand Canyon in June and stayed at Camp Navajo, an Army Guard facility at Williams, AZ. Nice CG just off the interstate, with W/E and new bath/laundry facilities. Centrally located between the GC and Sedona.

I'll put in a pitch for Zion Nat'l Park - not far off I-15 in southern Utah. Two major campgrounds at the entrance to the park, one of which (South CG) is first-come-first-served and no hookups (dump station and fresh water available at entrance of campground). The other is Watchman CG, water/elec hookups with a dump station. Easy access to the shuttle that runs up the main canyon. Lots to see and do.
