Thanks to both of you for the info. I'll look at Larry's info more thoroughly when I have a little more time. We planned to spend a month in New Zealand and up to three months in Australia. But we might have to re-think this after hearing from you both that it will take more time. Did you use Space-A to get there, or commercial air?

We could easily spend a couple years in Australia alone!

We took a commercial flight at $900 each RT. The problem was we had to return within 30 days, which is why it was a short trip. That, and the weekly rate on the "Maui" camper van was another $100+ a day.

Interesting to hear about the "buy back" program.

Another of our life goals is to spend a couple years in Europe RV'ing. Hopefully, the exchange rate will get better.

We flew from LAX to Auckland, and then on to Christchurch where we picked up the Maui Camper; on the return trip we stopped in Fiji for four nights - $1100 R/T each. There are military air / Space-A flights into Christchurch in support of Antarctica, but they are infrequent, and space is very iffy!
Regarding the buy back program (and most of the NZ campervan rental companies offer it), you buy a used camper from Maui (or whomever) and sign their buyback agreement. You need to have prearranged this before traveling to NZ!!. Campers offered under the program are used, typically six to eight years old and run the gambit from small two berth vans up to well equipped class C campers. Used camper prices vary, according to what you want to purchase, from approximately 20,000 NZD (15,000 USD) up to 100,000 NZD (75,000 USD). The seller will agree in writing to purchase the unit back from you for 55% of the original sale price, provided the unit has not traveled more than 30,000 kms (approximately 18,000 miles), that you have maintained and serviced the unit, no accidents and that you obtain a certificate of road worthiness to prove its acceptability, under NZ law. Renting our camper required that we purchase Maui’s insurance, at about $5.00/day - not very cost effective. Should you purchase the camper, the insurance will be considerably less expensive. One note: I did not think to ask back then about reimbursement of the NZ GST (as Canada will do).

OK, this thread is 3 years old, but now I am interested. My S.O. and I would like to camp in Europe, and have heard that there is camping at some bases or MWR sites. Is there any information on that?

We rented a "Minnie-Winnie" Sprinter Mercedes Class C for a month, spent a week in the Red Center, where we found the "Rock" a must see but boring but the McDonnell Range NW of it truly inspiring to camp. Then an air hop down to Adelaide and followed the Coastal Highway around. After Melbourne took the ferry to Tasmania and spent five days there before catchung it back to Melbourne. Continued east to Bribane, stopping in the Snowy River Counrty, Surfer's Paradise and Sydney (Only hotel at the RAAA) next to the Opera House, then on to Brisbane and the flight stateside. Camped at regular campgrounds, state parks, and roadside taverns. The only way to see Australia. Our intent is to return and try the route from the west coast north along the coast to Cairns and on around to Brisbane. Stayed at military service clubs (think like our old - style mess') in Adelaide and Brisbane. We are welcome there.
