You must apply to your particular branch of Service.

The website shown above should provide all the information that you need.

crsc is based on any disability you have that is combat or combat related injury. Most of my disability came out out of numerous tours in RVN. my VA deduction is 1200 plus per month from my retirement and my crsc is the same amount tax free. Basically it is a way to give back the va deduction from retirement if you can prove combat or combat training. I was lucky enough to walk out in 1981 with my complete medical file. others who have applied were not so lucky. after the big fire many had their records lost. Still worthwhile to apply.

"Lost in the Fire" is a commonly-heard reason for not being able to provide documentation of service-connected disability. I personally have run into at least a dozen people who make this claim. Now visit this web site...

www.nvlsp.org/Information/ArticleLibrary...FIRE-LOSTRECORDS.htm

...and look closely at the dates of the personnel affected. Hmmmm...

"A fire at the NPRC in St. Louis on July 12, 1973, destroyed about 80 percent of the records for Army personnel discharged between November 1, 1912, and January 1, 1960. About 75 percent of the records for Air Force personnel with surnames from "Hubbard" through "Z" discharged between September 25, 1947, and January 1, 1964, were also destroyed."

Anyone can do the research on the internet and the same dates/personnel affected will come up time after time. So whenever someone who claims time in RVN after Jan 1, 1964 starts telling me about how they're getting scr....d by the VA and they can't do anything about it because their records were lost in the big fire, I just smile and say, "Is that so?".

This Q was for a friend, he is retired USN and has a couple VA combat-related claims ... he was trying to find a good site for the CRSC info ... he has all his records, it's just figuring out what to do.

The veterans who claim the VA is Sc...ing them are just not doing claims properly -- I've never had a problem with my VA claims ... but I have all my paperwork too. At one time, I did have a problem, now that I think about it -- some records were missing. And, the VA helped me get them back, and ultimately recorded my claim. Didn't help me at the time, and I got hurt financially due to the delay, but eventually, when all the missing paperwork was presented on appeal, my claim was awarded. Took almost four years -- which is my only real complaint with the VA process -- it should never take that long.
