I have driven this route many times when heading to AZ. The road was very good and 4 lanes (Last trip spring 2013). Just be sure you fuel up whenever you have the chance. There was a new stations that opened in Roswell a couple of years ago that made it a lot easier for fuel stops. Some the area is pretty desolate and no rest stops except there are several areas to pull out and use your own facilities.
Some real pretty areas around Ruidoso and couple of Casinos you could park at if necessary. Not to far from there to Alamogordo and then just 15 miles west to Holloman AFB camp.
