I received the following letter, which I thought I would share with you....
Larry, My wife and I traveled this past summer, visiting several military campgrounds. I enjoyed seeing many of the RV's flying US flag. However, I'd like to suggest that you post a short article about flag etiquette.
US Code Title 36, Chapter 10, Section 174 says:
§174. Time and occasions for display
• (a) Display on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in open; night display
It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
We saw several flags flying in the darkness (after we would return from sightseeing) and they were not lighted. You might write/publish an article telling people, while it is extremely patriotic and widely respected to fly a US flag, proper protocol requires that, if they fly the flag after dark, it should be illuminated.
I am amused by the number of people who would not allow the flag to touch the ground, they post it above other flags in hierarchy, they dispose of their flag properly when tattered or unusable, yet they will fly it at night without lights. All are items listed in the Code.
Several people had solar lights shining on their flag. Some had electric lights wired to their hitches or ladders that would illuminate their flag.
On a personal note, I'm proud to fly our US flag from the rear ladder on our motorhome. It is not lighted and I take it down every evening. I am looking to get some lighting in the near future.
