My wife and I are approaching 5 months of RV'ing, so we are still "newbies". I would like to share so things I have learned in our short time/experience, that may save on gas cost.

We join the Good Sam Club and became deluxe member, which gives you an additional discount on gas at any Flying J or Pilot stations. After paying close attention to gas prices we noticed that the prices were actually cheaper at regular gas stations. Additionally, we are Kroger (grocery store) reward members, which is cheaper, and with the rewards members you receive and additional .03 cents off gas. It gets better - because we grocery shop occasionally at Kroger, when we reach 100 reward points (not hard to do - weekend earn double points) inside a calendar month, we receive .10 cents off gas.

I thought we were limited to just Kroger Kwik Stop gas stations, but no, the fuel program now allows you to receive discounts on fuel purchases at any Store in the Kroger Family.

The trade offs are location of the Kroger Family station along your route and inconvenience of fueling large RVs around cars, which can increase chances of an accident.

I use the GasBuddy smart phone app to locate the cheapest gas stations. This app has a filter feature, that allows you to only see diesel gas stations.

Here is another way to save on gas. Most us qualify to belong to the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. They offer a number of credit cards. One of them is the Visa Platinum Cash Rewards Card. It gives 5% cash back on all fuel purchases paid at the pump. There is no limit to the amount or where purchased and it is paid monthly. Last month we got $60 back. I only use that card for fuel and use there Penfed Defender card (Amex) for everything else. It also is a cash back card and pays 1% back each month.

Glad you found our Flying J and Pilot are not the best deal. We "might" use them once every 2 years.

Another deal, which I haven't seen lately is to buy a Walmart pre-paid gift card. Then use that same gift card to buy your diesel/fuel at a Walmart or Sam's gas station. You'll save 10% for using their gift card. But check this out, as I haven't seen this deal advertised lately and am not sure it still is valid.

We also all know, getting fuel at a military base gas station isn't always the best price. Here in Fairbanks, AK, fuel is over 5 cents/gallon higher on base. Just another one of our benefits that has gone away. But if you get a "Military Star" credit card, then it is 5% off on fuel when you use it at base stations.

Gas Buddy is my best buddy.

x2 This is still the best deal around, saving approx. 15 cents/gal on regular and diesel. We got back over $600. last year.

The WalMart credit card provides a 5 cent/gal discount. The gift card provides 3 cents discount. You put whatever amount on the gift card that you wish. Now here's a trick with the gift card. Load up the gift card using your cash back credit card. Double dipping discounts.

The negative is that most WalMart only sells fuel at stores that are mostly in the south and not past Texas.

Thanks for the clarification. It had been awhile since I used a Walmart card. 10% does sound like too good of a deal.
