Best Campgrounds

Just what is a great campground. We recently spent two nights at the Fort Bliss RV park. Top notch! All paved interior roads with concrete slabs, cooking grills, picnic tables, 50 amp FHU sites. A super modern community center with state of the art exercise equipment. Great laundry room. WiFi and computer friendly with CATV being installed while we were there. Office staffed every day and all for only $15.00 a day. A place truly designed for the paying customer. What about the kids? No grass. No play ground. No kids space. Is this a FamCamp or an adult RV Park? We are retirees and love the place. We wonder how the active member with a couple of kids would rate it.

Moving down south. MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. All kinds of hook-ups. Loads of sites. Marina, Restaurant, Fully staffed office. They got a little bit of something for everybody. But they cater to the ?Snow Birds? and you had better have reservations if you expect to get hooked up there in the winter. Campgrounds cater to the vacationer. ?Snow Birds? push that envelop.

Short Stay, Monks Corner, SC. Not a very good campground area. No FHUs and mostly all 30 amps. Not paved and no patios. But they truly are a FamCamp. Kids galore. Game rooms, party pavilions, beaches, all sorts of rental equipment, for fishing and boating or horse shoes, you name it. Fun for everybody. And they even have homesteaders.

Many years ago when camping on the road started to become popular KOA got it right. They saw it as a family affair and designed their Campgrounds for everyone. You wont find anyone tenting with the kids at Fort Bliss or MacDill. Spend a summer meandering around New England and you may be able to better define a family campground. Lots of our military installations are missing the point. You may not like a pet fee at Camp Blanding but at least it still resembles a FamCamp.

As you eluded to, everyone will have their own definition of what they think is a Best Campground.

I receive many emails disagreeing with the campground review process here, since many factors aren't considered. Someone who camps with their family in a tent may not agree with a 5 star rating given to Fort Bliss. Someone with a 42' all electric motorhome also may not agree with a 5 star rating given to Camp Blanding.

Wait until the announcement of the 2007 Camper's Choice Awards within the next couple of months. Voting is for registered website members with voting ending the end of the year. I'm sure people won't agree with whoever wins the OVERALL BEST CAMPGROUND for 2007 award. You can read more about the 2007 Camper's Choice Awards here.

Larry and Fasteagle -- you guys are right in that everyone does not enjoy the same ementities, so might vote differently about the "best CG" ... however, one thing that runs true through most of the comments is the 'clean" factor ... what many talk about is the fact that shower/rec rooms are available and whether the facilities that do exist are clean -- or, one other major factor seems to be the site and its hook-ups -- whether or not the site is easy to get into and whether the hook-ups are there and in the right place for convenient connections.

So, I'm not sure the factors about playgrounds, and fishing, and swimming, and base facilities come into play as much as those two items (clean and flat pads & hook-ups) ... I know that is what makes me like a CG is those two, as other things come into play at different locations or bases, just because of the area (swimming for example) where the base is located -- lakefront has swimming, foothills has hiking trails, etc... so apples and oranges ... but clean and hook-ups is pretty fundamental.
