Since Google has started charging to use the maps via a programming interface, I've tried a couple things:
1) For the month of December, the maps were enabled, but required you to click on a "View Map" button to see the map. The idea was to reduce the number of people looking at the maps, unless they actually wanted to. This worked pretty good at reducing the charges from Google. The maps were viewed a bit over 20,000 times. But why pay Google when there are other options?
2) I just enabled the maps on this website to use a different provider of maps other than Google. The maps are fully functional and now don't have the "View Map" button. The maps are using OpenstreetMaps (hope they stay free).
