Receiver Hitches-How to determine the class? was created by Old Shirt
Hey guys,
I have confirmed my Ram has the Factory Tow Package, including a 2" Reese receiver. The class III & IV both have 2" receivers. The little decal fell off and I would like to find out which class (III or IV) hitch I have.
So, according the Manual I can tow up to
-5k with a class III (6k on the reese site)
8.1K with a class IV (10K at Reese dot com)
Anyone know?
Thanks,
Tim

The only thing wrong with being retired is that you never get a day off!

An old timer told me that the only physical difference between a Class III hitch and a Class IV hitch is the weight and thickness of the material used to manufacture them. A Class III hitch uses 1/4" thick steel and a Class IV uses 3/8" thick.
I've never checked it myself, but it sounds logical to me.

Thanks Sarge, I kinda thought that would be the case, but didn't know what the dimensions might be.
I did call the local Dodge dealer, since I determined that I indeed have a factory Tow Package, and they are leaning toward a class III. So, I'll grab a WD hitch set up when the time is right and should be good to go.
Amazon has new Reese Pro series WDHs w/anti sway for $185ish (about 100 less than Reese) so that won;t hurt the wallet too bad.
