Covering Travel Trailer was created by MotorSarge
Looking for wisdom from the experienced RVers out there.
My question is; How to cover my travel trailer without standing on the roof? I have read elsewhere that standing on the roof may cause damage or that you may fall through. My ladder is only 8 foot tall and I'm wondering how to get the cover over the AC and antennas without hassle & damage.
Help please. ???

Motorsarge,
It is an urban myth that the roof won't hold you. They are very strong. I had an RV dealer tell me that the RV rep had them jump onto the roof of an RV to show them the sturdiness of them. Whether he was feeding me a line of BS, I don''t know, but I have been on the roof of mine many times and have no problems walking on it.
Think about pictures of people sitting on their roofs at NASCAR events, etc.
Maybe if your trailer is VERY old and the roof has had structrual damage, then I would be cautious.
Many RV's (including trailers), have ladders leading up to the roof and even rails around them for storage.

Two thoughts: If the roof truly won't hold you, but it probably will.
One -- lay two 24"x24" sheets of plywood on the roof andmove them around to "step" on as you need to move along the roof. That spread the weight over the pad.
Two -- lay the cover/trap out along one edge of the roof with a few ropes in the eyehooks, and toss the ropes across the roof to the opposite side. Get your ladder up on the opposite side, and lift the cover up and over the mechanical devices -- pull it slowly across the roof --move down and do it again. Could also use a stick with a hook in it instead of ropes and hook through the eyehooks to lift it over and pull it across -- moving along the edge.
Easier to just walk on the roof --

Monkey & Frank,
Thanks for the feedback. My TT is new so I will try the throw-over method first with the ropes and a guide stick as neccesary. I will leave the approach to actually getting on the roof as last resort if too much trouble though.

MS -- for the future ...
Just try walking on the roof -- a little weight on each foot at a time ... see if it sags beneath the boots -- I'm betting it won't ... I mean, don't go dancing a jig on it, but taking it easy and test it out. These roofs are a little fragile, but gotta take at least SOME weight ... just try it out.
