Flying J Diesel Prices was created by a Guest
Most of you probably know this but for those who do not here is some new info. We received a flyer in the mail in August about applying for the Transportation Alliance Credit Card for RV's from Flying J. It explained you get a penny extra off the price of diesel and a chart of how you can receive additional discounts on diesel when you buy food, etc. Used it the first time last week and our print out showed we got 9 cents off the pump price and the extra 1 cent per gallon. They also have a sticker on the diesel pump now that shows you get the 9 cents too. We have a credit card that gives us up to 2% cash back on purchases so decided to ask how discounts on the diesel price applied if we used it, they did not know since they said new rules had recently been implemented. We used the card (Discover) and got the penny off, not the 9 cents. This is on the truck side which we always use since we have a 45' RV. They told us if you use the RV side you can use any credit card and you get all discounts so be careful what you do at Flying J when you get diesel.

This has been in the works for awhile. As most know, Flying J issues an RV owners card that gets you a 1 cent discount on fuel purchases. I've had one for many years. Also, the posted price of fuel on their signs is 9 cents lower than what the pumps will actually show since the posted price is a "cash" price. If you pay with cash you get the discount at the register. If you pay with a credit card you pay 9 cents more than the posted price. Trucker's with the proper ID numbers get the "cash" discount regardless of how they pay. Flying J also gave the 9 cent discount to us RVer's who paid with a credit card but also had the Flying J RV card.
As of 9/1/08 Flying J stopped allowing the cash price unless you paid with cash. The Flying J RV card still got us the original 1 cent discount. The one exception to getting a cash discount and still use a credit card is to use the Transportation Alliance Mastercard issued through Flying J. Any other credit card and you don't get the 9 cent discount.
I could not justify getting another credit card just to get this discount. I use Discover Card almost exclusively. We get 5% discount on fuel purchases with our Discover Card. At current fuel rates that figures out about 20 cents per gallon. A much better return than the 9 cents I could get from getting Flying J's new card.

Thanks Old Chief 46, what Discover Card do you have that gets you 5% off of fuel and at what stations? You stated you use your Discover Card at Flying J and you get 20 cents per gallon, but you did not reinforce the fact that you do not use the truckers pumps, I mentioned to get all the discounts with another card you have to go to the RV/car side so that is what you probably can do with your RV, it is worth getting the TAB card if you have to go on the truckers side as we do. Many of the RV pumps are not safe to take a 45' RV and a tow vehicle or a big 5th wheel in as they have concrete pillars at the end when you have to turn. We had the RV onwers card for years and then got an FMCA Flying J card which was a 3 cent per gallon discount for the summer and when that expired we got the TAB card to get all the discounts on the truckers side plus up to 3 cents off the price of diesel with other purchases at Flying J.

I never, ever use the RV pumps. Got a bad batch of diesel from one and that cured me. If you look at the pumps at the trucker's island you'll notice a big white additional filter between the pump and the hose. Not all RV island pumps have that.
The 20 cents is based on the 5% cash back that Discover gives me on fuel purchases based on today's cost of fuel. If you use $4.00 per gallon the 5% equals 20 cents. Not all Discover cards give the same cash back. I have two, one is a regular Discover card we've had for years and one is a Wal-mart Discover card I use only when I get fuel at a Wal-mart/Sam's Club (Murphy Oil). On one of the Monaco group Yahoo sites there was a discussion on the 5% cash back on fuel from Discover. I was not getting it so called Discover car and they changed my account. You just have to call your Discover card provider to see if they offer it. (Like Visa and Master Card not all Discover cards are issued by a central enity. Each issuer has their own rules. I can't get the 5% on fuel from the Wal-mart issued Discover card.)
I could not justify getting another credit card to use that would give me 9 cents a gallon at Flying J when I can buy fuel anywhere with my Discover card and get 20 cents per gallon off. There may be a maximum amount per month that the 5% will apply to but if there is I have not gone over that amount yet.

FYI my curiosity was peaked about the 5 cents off a gallon of gas so I did some research on the Discover cards offered. The card that gets 5 cents off per gallon allows you 100 gallons a month max and the rest of the purchases you get 1% cash back. My Discover card allows up to 2% cash back on any and all purchases so that one works for me as we use one credit card and pay it off each month so cash back adds up nicely for us as we do not incur interest charges. Since we go in the Flying J trucker fuel spots we will continue using the TAB so we get the 10 cents off per gallon and can get up to 13 cents with other purchases at the store/restaurant. Sure does help to hear what other folks do and makes you check what is out there as credit card offers change frequently. Thanks Oldchief46!

Some friends recently told me that Discover has now put a limit on the number of gallons per month that get the 5% cash back. So far ours has not changed and we are still getting 5% on all our fuel purchases. We'll have to keep a watch on it to determine if they change it on future billings.
