Cell phone signal was created by morscuba
I was sitting here at Racoon Creek MacDill AFB wondering if my cell phone would make a good fishing weight,,cause thats all they're good for here (at least if you have verizon). I went to the BX and bought a cell phone booster by Z-Boost. $269.00 later and about 15 min. to set up the antenna, I have 4 bars of signal !!! and I can use this thing I'm typing on (I have the Verizion wireless card). Anyway I am right impressed. I have been to enough MCG's with very weak signal I'm hoping this takes care of the problem. Thought I would pass this along..Hope everyone has good holiday's..

Last year when I was there with Verizon I had great recepton with both the phone and aircard. I wonder what type of phone you have, meaning analog, digital, trimode? When I purchased ours I looked for the tri-mode (both analog and digital and something else) I used to have a problem at some bases (Ft Eustis, VA for one), and after going tri-mode we have not had a problem anywhere. I just looked at this sites CG reviews for this CG and found no mention in all the reviews that they are experiencing a problem with their phones or air cards. I would venture to guess, that if the largest military camp ground had a problem with their pone / air card service, that we would have heard about it long ago. I think you must have a problem with either your phone or is some way, your set up.
It would be nice if any other readers who have been there would jump in with their two cents worth.;

Could be the phone Frank. I know problem doesn't start until I move to the partial hookup site..(try to beat the rush). It has been this way since coming here into partial HU (3 years). I wouldnt have bothered except I have three rugrats deployed and was getting tired of dropping calls when they would call. Anyway Ive been in enough other places with crappy signal I think I will get some use out of it.

It's been a couple years since we've been to MacDill FamCamp. We have Verizon and didn't have any problems in the main campground. We don't have a booster, but do have a "Wilson Trucker" external cell phone antenna. When needed to use it, we usually get a couple more bars with just the antenna. I think a booster and/or antenna is a very useful item for anyone traveling.

Allow me to jump in here with a related question -- I saw mention by Frank of 'trimode' phones and that started me wondering if there is any point to trimode anymore. (We bought one for the same reason - more flexibility in finding signal.) Didn't Verizon (and the others) turn off the analog towers earlier this year and go to digital cell towers only??
Asking because our old faithful trimode phone took a dive from a high place and the lcd panel on the front is acting funny - we know we're going to have to replace it soon. Do they even sell trimode phones anymore? Just doing a little reasearch in advance of the need. Thanks for any help!

Mustang03,
I had also heard that tri-mode was history as the analog towers were a thing of the past. However I believe that a lot of bases still had analog towers and used them. Don't remember where I heard it, it may have been at a Verizon store though.
My question is what is the tri in tri mode for. I think it was explained that it was 1) analog, 2) digital, 3) both or automatically either.
My phone is a couple years old, I replaced the battery with an upgraded bigger battery last year, and it is still going strong. It is a simple flip phone with a camera. We don't text or d/l music or use all the bells and whistles they can do now days. We simply make and receive calls. It works great for that.
