Hi all,
Planning to visit NOLA and use the new military RV park there. Question is, what is the best way to get downtown? To avoid the hassle of driving, parking, etc., would prefer to take the Canal St/Algiers ferry which appears to land only a few blocks from Bourbon St.
A few questions to anyone familiar with the area. Is it feasible to walk from the RV park on the Navy base to the ferry landing in Algiers(or is it too far)? If not, and you have to drive to the ferry in Algiers, is there adequate parking at the ferry landing? What is the parking fee?
Any input on this subject will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

The only thing wrong with being retired is that you never get a day off!

I haven't stayed at the new campground yet, but it looks too far to walk to from the base. I don't know if there is shuttle service from there or not.
I've always stayed at Bayou Segnette State Park, which looks about the same distance from the Algiers ferry as the Navy Base. I drive to the Algiers ferry (which is free, by the way) and park there. There is a large commercial parking lot right next to the ferry terminal and the charge there was $10 for the day. The ferry runs very frequently and lets you off at the foot of Canal Street. From there it's an easy walk into the French Quarter.
Have fun!!!

You're very welcome seadog. Have a great trip, and don't forget to go by the World War II museum while you're there. It's a really fascinating place.

The World War II museum opened a couple of years ago and is a really great half day or so trip. They have a 4D show that gives an overview of the war and exhibits from both the European and Pacific theaters. It's a little bit of a walk from the Canal Street terminal, so I drove there. Paid parking lots are directly across the street from the museum. Here's a link to give you and idea of what's there:
