Question about motor home size limits was created by JJvike
Hello all,
First, great site! New to all of this and looking forward to seeing the country at my pace. I've looked through the southeastern parks and was wondering where I can find what/where the size limits are. We just bought a 39' motor home and some of my friends have told me that I will not be allowed in quite a few parks because of lot size availability. Is calling each facility the only way to find out in advance or did I miss a previous topic on this. Thanks in advance, and again, great site.

We have a 40 ft. and find most places can handle us. Some older State Parks may be a problem; however, most military will be fine.

When looking at the listings on this website, there's a setting for "Big Rig Friendly". If this say's "yes", you're safe. However, don't rule out a military campground if this setting doesn't show at all. We still don't know the setting for every campground. Of course, if this setting says "no", I'd stay away from there.

Ditto - have a 40' MH. Only a very few military campgrounds can't handle rigs this size. State and federal parks, and Corp of Engineers are another story.Kokomo36 wrote: We have a 40 ft. and find most places can handle us. We too have a 39' motorhome and have never had a problem at military campgrounds. Now, state parks, national parks and Corp of Engineer campgrounds are a different story!

First, welcome to the forum. I hope you actually do get to see the country at your own pace. It is a wonderful experience.
I doubt there are any parks that "won't allow" you into certain parks. They published dimensions, but you have the choice of fitting into them or not.
I rarely do state parks because the tree huggers won't allow them to cut trees and tree limbs to make it big rig maneuvering friendly. Corp of Engineer parks are usually not encumbered with that problem. Since most of the COE CG parks have back in sites, there is a tire stop at the back. They publish their length from the front of the site to the tire stop. That means that a published 35 ft length might actually be 40 because of the extra distance behind the tire stop.
The real key to site size is the fact that the shorter it is the more it could be susceptible to leveling issues because of sloping. It doesn't cost any more to get a longer site, so try to do that.
I agree with the opinions that the majority of FamCamps are not an issue.
You can find site dimensions for federal parks at one of these two sites. www.rexerve.gov or www.recreation.gov

We have a 45' class A and before we go into a military or private campground for the first time we call to be sure they can accomodate us. We do find at times they have long enough sites but the roads are narrow and they have trees along the site so before we go to the site we unhitch the tow vehicle and check out the site to be sure we can turn safely into and out of the site. If you have the Good Sam Trailer Life Directory they indicate if the campground is big rig rated and if it is you should be okay. We do not attempt COE or State Parks either and a majority of military campgrounds will be just fine for you.
