This is an old thread, but worth a comment. In the past year, my wife and I have eaten in the "dining halls" and "galleys" at Fairchild AFB, Travis AFB, and Petaluma CG Training Center. The food was well prepared, selections were numerous and the price was right. We never paid more than $6 per meal and the dining rooms were more like buffet style restaurants than the chow halls of a long ago era. We will continue to take advantage of this great travel perk and save our eating $ for those special nights on the town!

I think the new term is Dining Facility. Didn't really enjoy them when on AD, but the cooks could cook when they had to. Best breakfast ever was when supporting a reserve/guard engineer unit over in Ft Smith Ark back in 80's. Best mess hall was the transportation one in Yong San Korea back in the mid 70's.
The isolated mountain top signal sites had some good cooks also. Used to drop in to 'assist' just for free fresh bread or donuts! Surprising what a visit in a helicopter would get ya in exchange of a lift:) But sadly the modern vol army of the late 80's pretty much put a stop to that. Still remember the stuff from Salem Top and the Vanderbilt site in Taejon area (Golf if I remember right?)
