I think it depends on the installation. Ft Huachuca was pretty sticky, plus they normally do not have a place to store them for you. Ft Hood was the same as I recall, thus why I do not camp on mil reservations. But believe it or not I have seen private campgrounds with stuff that says 'firearms' not permitted, another reason I dont go to calif.

I have talked to a lot of RVers at military campgrounds that carry in their RV and never check them in and have never been asked when they entered the base. You are still taking a chance of being searched but I have never heard of that happening.

I have never been asked if I have a firearm. A lot of RVers carry firearms and need to just remember not do something stupid. I'm also a retired Oklahoma law enforcement officer and am authorized to carry a concealed weapon. There are exceptions, military installations being one of them, so I leave the firearm in the RV.

with Ft hood in the news and the 'administration' going to go on another witch hunt for people with their dangerous guns, I would be very careful of being caught on post/installation with one particularly if not declared. I have seen them do vehicle random inspections at DMAFB, and they did do my truck 1 time some years ago. Had the same thing at Ft Huachuca.
If your going to have one know what is required, get a ccwp although not accepted all across the states and again a mil installation is a world of its own.
As I said before I dont take the rv or weapons onto the installations.

My wife and I travel a lot to Skeet shoots across the country. We have camped on bases with our shotguns stored in our TC and will continue to do so. If I were to be random searched, it would be upon entry and not at the camp site. I believe the worst that would happen is I would be denied access to the base with the guns on board. I would ask at that point if they had provisions for storing the guns on base while I was there. If not, I would find another location to stay. Not a big deal in my opinion.
