Where to stay when visiting Washington DC was created by AZtravelers
We will be visiting the DC area in a few months, probably May. We would like to know which FamCamp would have public transportation into DC. We do not travel with a tow vehicle. Our Via is 25' so could we drive to a Metro station?

There are several military campgrounds locally in DC area. But only two has transportation near the bases. 1) Joint Base Andrews (actually located in Camp Springs, MD - 15 miles from downtown DC) is the closest but you will need to exit base to get to transportation hub. Base MWR can/will give you directions on how to get public transportation. you will need reservations for RV camping. Call as soon as possible, sites go fast especially that time of year due to PCS movements. 2) Next closest base near transportation is Fort Belvoir, VA - 20 miles outside of DC). As with Andrews call for reservations. Fort Belvoir MWR will provide directions to transportation hub. Fort Meade, Md/Fort A.P.Hill, VA has campground but over 30 miles and not close to transportation. You may want to call Quantico Marine Base, Quantico, Va as they were supposedly constructing a campground there two years ago but nothing has been heard of as of yet. Whichever base you use inquire about discount tickets to some of the venues in DC and ALL federal operated tourist attractions are free but some you will need tickets that designate times of tours, i.e. White House, Washington Monument and several other locations.
Hope you get here and enjoy your visit. Good Luck.
PS: Beware that Andrews has an Airshow in the Month of May and the weekend of show may bee hard to get on base.

Fort Belvoir has express bus (REX, Richmond Highway Express, operated by Metrobus) has service (end of route/turn around) onboard base.. but I believe it is a good hike from the FamCamp to the bus route..
The Fairfax Connetor (also a "city bus") now provides service onboard. but I do not know the route specifics..
Andrews FamCamp is a long way from the main gate, (On the "Navy" side.. across road from golf course).. and not near anything..
Another option, with bus service at the CG is Greenbelt Park at the Beltway and Baltimore Washington Parkway..

We stayed at Ft. Meade when visiting. It was only about a mile or two from the train system which takes you right down to grand central station. There is a large parking area so parking in our 1 ton dually was not an issue. We stayed there a couple years ago and the famcamp is nice with large sites. Enjoy your trip
