would be more helpful if you indicated where you wanted to travel. Do you want to go North and see what is located in the great american flyover areas? How about south where you can go coast watching in fla-tx?
Need a little more info on plans, otherwise like us you will just go wherever you want but maybe not have access to mil camps without a lot of research on your own part.

Virginia is very large.. Southern Virginia would head west by dropping down to I-40 (west of Ashville hills) while Northern Virginia would I-70..
Since we are Northern Virginia we go.. I-66 to I-81 North to US-522.. I-68 from Hanover MD to Morgantown, I-79 to I-70.. Stop at Wright-Patterson for a day or two and "get into the road trip mood".. Scott AFB (or Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park) are a good stop for St. Louis.. Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City.. (have lunch at the Cattlemans Cafe in the stockyard district)
Have also taken the Northern route.. US-2 westbound from Grand Forks (see the Spam Museum in Austin Minnesota)
hope this helped..
And Fuel in Ohio and if you must fuel in Indiana or Illinois only buy enough to get to Missouri..

We recommend Natchez State Park at Pin Oak RV Campground, which is right off I-40.
Address:
567 Pin Oak Lodge Road
Wildersville, TN 38388
Online Reservation:
- military discount (during online reservation)
- you pick your site location
- highly recommend SITE #33, #32, or 30, they over looks the lake (awesome breathe taking view) not blocked by trees. These SITES are popular and are booked early. This picture I attached is from SITE #33.
