No matter how you slice that apple or orange FamCamp prices will be adjusted to stay just below private campgrounds to keep us coming. It is always about the bottom line and no matter how much we gripe about it or why it is done we are at their mercy of paying the increase, will we keep going to the FamCamps, you bet we will. Yes they are run like a private business even though we like to think they are not, Larry nailed it!

I haven't heard this and I don't know if it is true or not. By law, the PX and commissary are limited to selling items at no less than 10% below the average of local civilian prices. Could this same mechanism be true with MCG's? The PX and commissary are operated with appropriated funds while the MCG is not, but is it possible that MWR thinks this is a great idea and does it too? Just a thought.

The only thing wrong with being retired is that you never get a day off!

Don't know the answer to how they figure prices for MCG - but the commissary is five percent surcharge over cost (which will probably change soon when it privatizes) which you can see on your receipt. BX on the other hand, went private contractor some years ago, and as I recall it, the prices went up and the quality of products went down in many brands.

Private contractors might be required to sell ten percent or more lower than local civilians, but I've seen plenty of stores that sell lower than BX pricing for the same products. The only one I notice as less cost generally is the "Shoes" because when you price Nike and others, street prices are higher -- it's possible Nike makes a specific model (maybe less quality, but it doesn't appear less) for the BX stores. Like it makes a specific brand and price for big box stores ...

BTW John -- will be over at NAS JAX first week in Nov if you're around - or, could shoot up to King Bay???

The current pricing structure for the commissary under current law is the Defense Commissary Agency sells goods @cost plus a 1% bump to cover spoilage and loss and then the 5% surcharge; this is from a Feb. 2016 article and Congress is pushing for "variable pricing" in 2017 which means the commissary can raise or lower prices regardless of what items cost in the system.
