I have noticed that some on this forum are campground host(s) at MWR campgrounds. I would like to know how one goes about getting a "gig" like that.... Also, is there a time comittment as far as length to serve, is hosting a volunteer or "paid" position, duties involved, and other things that a required of a host....
I am retiring and looking to go full-time or at least "snowbird" and need something to keep me busy at least on a part time or so basis.....This sounds like something that would be interesting and able to meet lots of great campers....
Thanks for your info.....

John....it isn't easy to get into the "camp hosting gig" as you might think.....alot of places the hosts have been the hosts there a long time, if not forever, but......most MWRs have an app. you can fill out, or as we do, a short resume' on your and your spouses work/life experiences and leave with the Outdoor Rec./Campground Mgr and they'll call you.......1st.....you really got to like people and have lots of patiences......and be a good listener......a background in "customer service" is very helpful......be willing to go the extra mile to make sure your campers are reasonably happy and content......military camp hosts are volunteer positions, mostly......you do get your site free for your duties you perform.....Meet and Greet folks, clean facilities and sites, if required by the MWR where you are, giving directions for locations of PX/BX, commissary, etc.....most military campgrounds require you work 20-25 hours....we find as volunteers, it is a little more than that....lol....but, the most important thing to remember is "treat your campers as you would like to be treated if you were the camper." Some places require you to stay for a length of time, usually 2-3 months, others let you decide how long you want to stay.....we've done a couple months to the whole winter season......and , of course, you are there to be "in charge" when the campground office is closed.......We have friends that do camphosting and workcamping with civilian run campgrounds where they do pay you after your required hours of work.......there are some great websites out there where you can find more info on this.....hope this helps.....

Last summer, my wife hosted at a National Forest campground and I was the area manager for 15 NF campgrounds. Unlike most military campgrounds, we pay $8.50/hr for ALL hours (40 hrs/wk) plus a free RV site. For these positions, it's a job. About 80% of it is fun and 20% is frustrating.
As Bill's HR mentioned, THOUSANDS of seasonal hosting job openings are listed in the WorKamper magazine. Info is at www.workamper.com . Occasionally, military campgrounds will also list openings there.
